Re: Important things we don't talk about much

I can accept the e-book (because I have a Kindle so understand).

But seems I was right in that people don't feel 8-10 years of good sleep is worth $1000

Meanwhile another "important" that come to mind is good cook wear.

as long as it provides protection from splatters, but I accept that for some reputation is more important than protection

Absolutely. I know people who feel they just must have hardback books. Other than charts and guides related to boating and cruising, we have none on our boat. We are prolific kindle readers. One of the greatest inventions of the century.

Well, we would. Sleep is very important and our mattresses are. We purchased a mattress about a year ago for our home and fell in love with it. So did our friends. So we bought mattresses like it for boats as well.

Before we leave the mattress debate, may I offer an explation of why we sleep so much better on cheap foam in the boat than your best one at home? What makes you uncomfortable is tissue ischemia. When at home it is a trick to keep your muscles and joints perfusing, but on the boat you're rocked back and forth, pumping your tissue full of fresh blood. So you don't hurt, and you sleep well. It works for me.

That, the mattress, and a good duvet.
The best coffee is made with a french press. I put grind five tablespoons of whole beans to medium, put the grinds in and then very hot water. Let steep for exactly five minutes then press. If you let it steep to long the coffee will be bitter.

Memory foam and a synthetic down duvet......zzzzzzzzz.

Micro fiber towels

cold beer

+1 that makes sense now. I've always slept way better in my v berth where your legs are slightly higher then your head compared to the rest of the boat but never thought that could be a contributing factor.

Yup, I have a small one-person titanium (!) french press, and at home I use an electric grinder for that fresh taste. WHen I'm out an about, I usually use a handheld grinder.

I purposely didn't specify in the first post what my preference is, because "good coffee" seems to differ with the person. I mean, some people like espressos and lattes - which I really hate.

I find I sweat, or rather "transpire" when I lay on memory foam. I'm not necessarily always hot on it, but I feel clammy like hell.

I also prefer down (you can get them with silicone coated down so moisture is no problem), but I'm toying with an idea of getting a silk-filled duvet for summer and perhaps even a wool-filled duvet for winter.

No! They hurt too much when you fall asleep and they hit you in the head.

A good BBQ unit as it seems I use it for cooking as much as my stove! The one I have just doesn't put enough heat to really sear the outside of a steak. Yes it will cook it, but............ May have to look into the newer infrared red grills.

GARBAGE!!
We don't talk about those situations when you are offshore and the maggots start to break thru the plastic bags because someone was too lazy to clean and seperarte the leftovers.
What do you do?

BBQ don't work when it's blowing 20kts. We got rid of ours. Got a good cast iron pan. Sears a steak wonderfully.

OK an infrared red grill AND a cast iron pan (to use on the grill)

For that very reason we use a portable turbo oven on board Whole chicken in 45min. Crisper and more moist than you can ever do on a BBQ. Same with fish and steaks
