Yes. Of course you are right. Newer folks just have to get to know older folks personalities better, understand that they have no real world knowledge and that they are clearly misunderstanding when others make the occasional offensive comment about a particular race or gender. Got it. Glad we got that cleared up. I'm sure I'll feel much more comfortable contributing now.

I think I have noticed good advice on ages old issues to come more often from the experienced sailors but good ideas on brand new issues to come more often from the inexperienced ones.

So I say listen to everybody then make your own decisions.

I didn't say newer folk or older folk...See...that's how the misinterpretation starts. By misquoting and a snide reply. Please show me where it was said in my post or anyone else's about a new person not having "real world knowledge".
As far as your comfort level...that's completely up to you. People are not going to sugar coat their comments just so so can feel safe. I mean really...do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?

I really was not. I guess I haven't been to forums who use them similar to this. It really was a legitimate question. I am not generally an idiot but sometimes a bit awkward. Apologies

And how did you make the determination she was "just trolling" ?
I thought she was wanting to learn something, and in a much less
humorous way than my attempt.

The smiley is totally new to me too.
IMHO DOJ nailed it. YMMV...

Much harder than face to face. But.

To answer: For someone to profess experience on the internet (and that would include forums) and not know about emoticons seems dubious to me.

To me. But.

YMMV.

Hey, I'm totally happy to agree to disagree on it seems pretty much everything with you Celestialsailor but I think even a simple re-read of your own comments in an effort to see how folks might be "misunderstanding" you could be helpful. Perhaps you can see from your words why I believed you to be saying what you seem to be saying. How am I misunderstanding you here?

And RE: "misquoting and snide remarks" - just to clarify because I think you have done exactly that - I have not asked for anyone to "sugar-coat" their comments so I "can feel safe." I have said that I choose not to engage as much as I once did because of the personal attacks and negativity which I see here far more than I'd like. This was my understanding of the gist of this thread and exactly what seems to have happened here, with you. Again. Really, we must stop meeting like this.
But seriously, I'm not alone in feeling there is too much here from time to time - other people are saying the same thing so clearly this little CF pet peeve is not mine alone.

I think we ALL can agree to disagree that any particular comment is or is not racist. Or sexist. Or stupid. Or ill-informed, dangerous, or downright mean. And I think we can be civil to each other regardless. But people are gonna do what they're gonna do and believe what they're gonna believe...

Re: If I Don't Agree With You am I Therefore wrong?

Speaking as a CF forum NOOB I see two things happening, certainly they happen to me.

1. So much of the tone of a message is lost in a written communication. This happens a lot in the corporate world that I reluctantly frequent to fund my sailing ambitions. People accidently rub each other the wrong way simply because without the accompanying body language much of the message is lot. I tend to walk around to the desk of the person I need to communicate with whenever practical, particularly with complex issues. It's safer.

2. Nobody knows the level of knowledge you have, particularly as NOOB. Reasonably enough, when I post a question, I sometimes get a lot "extra answer" that I didn't ask for. I could easily be offended and feel patronised, until I step back and say "hang on, this advice is given with the best intentions, the person posting a reply to a question I asked knows nothing about me except that I have asked for help. Perhaps I should be thankful for their extra effort instead of feeling patronised. After all, I ASKED for help."

FWIW, I am a member of three internet forums, one on a very specialised form of electronics, another on a particular petrol-head type of car, and this forum, CF. Of these forums, I have seen more people take a comment slightly out of context (I have the advantage of reading through the posts and subsequent replies of course) and get riled more on CF than either of the others. Even the petrol-head forum seems less volatile, strangely, though it is rife with TROLLS, people are used to ignoring them. The electronics forum is by nature, pretty dry, and nobody's life is on the line if someone posts something silly, so maybe it does not count.

Either way, I am grateful for the advice I get here, it's like having a family history of ten generations of sea captain to draw on, with the advantage that it is up to date knowledge.

I didn't mean I have never seen emoticons. I used one in my post, did I not? I said I was not familiar with the use of ;whistling;, ,thumb; (often multiple timess); and especially in text form. I am usually not sure if it is positive or sarcastic. I even asked my husband, Shaktisboy (who encouraged me to join!) and he had not seen them either. So I thought I would pose the question.
I administer the forum for my company and search many technical forums because of my work and had not seen this use so ... Just didn't know. Simple as that.
The responses, however, were interesting. Thanks for those who responded.

I thought was for tongue-in-cheek, and faux innocence fits just fine; I use this a lot because I seldom intend to be taken seriously. This is just fun for me, mostly. It's the only forum I post in. When the talk gets real, I STFU and listen. I have been chided recently for being a jerk. Yeah, there's some late-breaking news. Welcome to my world.

I've noticed that negativity follows some posters around. I'll usually have a run at a windmill-ish cut-and-paste sailor but when I realize that nothing will shut 'em up, what can you do? In real life you get the hell away. Here, if you want to participate, ya gotta read their fluffy stuff.

In my view, an unintended consequence of the Be Nice rule is that rather than suffer reading innumerable insufferable posts by know-nothings, many drop out or move on. Careful CF readers will know that I will not get the last word here.

On edit: remember Indy? He wasn't posting for discussion. He was preaching. He caught hell for it but it never slowed him down. Boorish with a capital B.

LakeEffect: "People who use a SAILING forum as a springboard for non-sailing political wankery (guns climate-change etc) should be keel-hauled...."
Totally agree; you have to throw in something such as anchor preferences to make it a legitimate thread, as in, "Which anchor is the best choice for cruisers who are carrying a large cargo of concealed weapons in their superior ferro-cement boat and crew's quest to save the planet?"

Assumptions and projections about people we've never met don't always help the discussions.

Re: If I Don't Agree With You am I Therefore wrong?

The saddest part of CF, to my way of thinking, is the lost opportunity to hear from those who make mistakes and therefore others learn by them. This is such a tough crowd to admit errors to, that I am sure we don't hear the real story behind 90% of goof ups. Potentially this forum could soar if the knockers could just resist. Typically what happens first is a news item will appear about a sailing accident in some national newspaper. Someone will post a link here on CF and before long we have all the armchair sailor's in creation giving their point of view. Someone will post a derogatory comment and before long we have mud slinging going on. Do we ever get a chance to the skipper's side? .........No and I wonder why?
