I Can Take You Away From All That

"I can take you away from all that" is the line I give my wife when ever she feels the burden of the modern work-a-day life. It isn't entirely true because we are still paying for the boat but I wonder how many people out there decided to take a boat that was just summer's past time and moved aboard permanently?

How was the transition?
Do you have any regrets?
What is your long term plan?

I worked for eleven years in Saudi Arabia to save up enough money to purchase a boat and to sail around the world. By the time I left Arabia, I was really ready for an ocean cruise. It was a clear case of been there and done that, and I was ready to sail the seven seas. We moved aboard our boat in Florida, and four months later started out on our circumnavigation. I left Riyadh in January and in April I was heading through the Panama Canal. I was scared and inexperienced, but I was also ready for a change. Here is a web page that fills you in on the details. I lived on board for only three and a half months before we set sail, so it can be done.

Pretty much. Once you make the decision and make yourself unemployed and homeless, things move very quickly. Quit our jobs, sold our house, sold every single possession and sailed away in 1 month.

You can plan all you like, but the endgame is the only real part and it is quick and confusing.

Reminds me of that story of Cortez. Once he got to the new world he burned his boats. Do or die, wonderfully focuses the mind. I suppose that this is what's part of my problem. I'm still tied to the apartment and all my possessions. Perhaps a contents sale is in order.

Put all your personal and emotional stuff in boxes and put them aside. Send any family heirlooms off to other family members. Take out ads in the papers and craigslist that say you are opening your apartment and absolutely everything is for sale. Don't put high prices on anything and don't bargain hard. What is left after all the vultures are gone (won't be much at all), take to the dump.

Sit in your empty apartment with your personal and emotional items and look through them and reminisce. Then put them back in their boxes and take them to the dump.

Really, I can't tell you how free, light and unburdened you will feel. Your whole life just jumps forward unimpeded and with a fresh outlook. It was one of the most memorable feelings in my life, and I wish I could experience it again.

Our transition was simple,- we had never accumulated more possessions than would fit in our car. We have no regrets and since we moved aboard and left for our first cruise on the day of the Watergate Burglary, June 17th, 1972, this is the "long term plan".
