Took and passed ASA 101 and put in a few hours of solo practice on a "non-navigable" lake during my summer vacation. I can see sail trim is an art form that needs a LOT of practice.

Give me another 97 hours of 10kt winds and I might have a pretty good idea of what to do.

Yeah. But the art of sail trim varies with wind speed and angle on the wind. 10 knots of wind is not going to teach you a lot. At least you'll get good experience raising and lowering the sails...

Keep at it, I learnt in the same progressive fashion. Just wait 'til you try reefing in the first blow...

12 to 14 knots is much better. Yer boat may actually git up 'n go!

97 hours? I must be a really slow learner! (actually in my case, it's cause I just get myself so I'm moving and just lose myself in the solitude, rather than getting too crazy over every point of sail. Someday!)

u r a sailer when you step on a boat. Sailing is like chess, you can explain/read/learn the rules/advice/suggestions in a relatively short time. Learning how is a lifelong process.

When I wanted to learn to sail I asked a co-worker who was an excellent sailor for advice. I never forgot what he told me.

"I can teach you how to sail in 15 minutes, but it will take you 15 years to become a sailor."

I for one welcome you to the ranks of people having fun. You know what to do and in due course nature will change the environment a little to test your ability to do it under more strenuous circumstances.

Im a fairweather sailor. Trouble is that I often find myself in otherwise inclined situations. All the practice I had in good weather stands me in good stead. It will you too.

As my father tough me "Anyone can sail in good winds, but it takes a good sailer to sail in light winds and heavy winds". I was 7 years old then. At 62 now I find that it is still true.
