How to format a Spanish enye, as in El NinYO

It's getting closer to our winter weather in Southern California and I'm still not able to effectively type in the Spanish "enye", the "n" with a squiggle, on the CF remarks. Can anyone assist with this? The rain promises to be significant, and I'd sure like to be able to effectively name it instead of using the phonetic "el ninYO".

On an iPad if you press the 'n 'and hold it there, you have the option of selecting ñ or ń by sliding your finger up.

On a desktop:
Activate Number Lock
Hold the ALT button then type 164 = ñ
Hold the ALT button then type 165 = Ñ
Deactivate Number Lock


If all else fails, copy El Niño into a word doc and just paste it in your posts .

Rats! I use a laptop and all that is happening is the page changes. Any other suggestions?

In a laptop, you must first press NumLock as the numbers must be typed in the numeric keypad, which usually shares keys with letters. But that depends on the model.
Alternatively, you can install the Spanish keyboard map in the control panel. Then you'll find the 'ñ' just right of letter 'L'.

Your laptop keyboard will have a number lock key. It may be labelled NumLock, or NumLk, or Num (check on the top row first).

To activate it, you may need to press Shift or Alt or Fn at the same time (it depends if anything else is written on the same key and what colour the writing is on the key).
A light on the number lock key may come on when you are successful.

Once numbers are locked you should get ñ if you hold the ALT button then type 164

Also Alt + 0241 on the numeric keypad = ñ or Alt + 0209 = Ñ

To locate any character, type Charmap at a command prompt. Select a character and see the Alt key combination in the bottom right corner or just select, copy and paste.

I use a free program for Windows called "Spañish Accents CapLock" that you can find at: Type Spanish Accents Easily! - One Hour Programming - Programming for the Rest of Us. It repurposes the CapsLock key so if you want to type a letter with an accent mark, you simply hold the CapsLock key and press the desired letter.

It works pretty well for most of the Spanish accent marks. If you wantto use the caps lock key to lock ur keyboard into all caps, hit the caps lock key twice in quick succession.

Using Windows, most versions:

In the lower right hand corner of the desktop should be a tiny icon of a keyboard. Click on it. You want to change to a spanish keyboard.

For those of us in Canada, who foolishly installed windows with a "canadian" keyboard, "canadian" really means french. So despite my patriotic allure, I use the "US" keyboard setting.

You may need to go to CONTROL PANEL, REGION AND LANGUAGE, Keyboards and languages, change keyboards, ADD.

When visiting other countries and using internet cafes, I was surprised at the variety of different and weird (to me) keyboards. Often, finding the @ symbol, to enter an email address, took several minutes.

Roy, you didn't mention which device(s)/OS(s) you are using...

On iPads just press and hold a character to see additional options for that character.

On a Mac, hold the option key and type n to get the tilde, release the option key and type n a second time and you get the n under the tilde: ñ Ñ

I see others have chimed in regarding how to do accomplish this on Windows devices.

Probably irrelevant now that you know how to get the tilde. It is NINyo not ninYO.

Hi, It's actually neenyo. An i in English is a long E in espanol...A very big problem for second language English speakers from down south! Hence "seestair" for sister. The E in espanol is a long A in English...Good luck with all that!

Caps are often used to show accent not pronunciation. I was correcting the accent not the pronunciation and leaving how to type a tilde to the experts. So, how about NEENyo?
