Okay, I’ll admit it. I used to be younger. Still can’t quite fathom that I’m 70 now. This only becomes apparent in near proximity to mirrors or other reflective surfaces. Yes, knee replacement surgery hurt my sailing this past year, but I’m nearly ready to hobble back on deck.

I’m not sure it matters how many years we’ve been around. What may matter more is how days we’ve truly loved being alive.

What's your condition? I am 40 and was diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve several years ago. It's genetic apparently and I've developed it via my maternal grandfather who had surgery in the '80s. At that time they cut him open from clavicles to sternum and left quite a big scar. I'm told that now they can do the whole surgery through a dime sized hole off to the side, maybe through the armpit.

I don't know if my tiredness is just lazy/out-of-shape, or if I'm starting to feel the effects of reduced valve function.

Good luck with your future surgery.

these days that surgery isn't much more than a day surgery . Get it fixed and you will find your stamina will return as you go thru the Pt part of the recovery.

We had a meeting with our financial advisor who asked about leaving money for our kids. I told him we want to use it all up by 85 and then die in debt. He thought we were kidding, but we are serious!

My retirement plan is to be homeless. Emulating poverty is often the best thing you can do, especially if you're broke.

Who’s emulating .

People ask how can we be “retired” at 48/52 (the age we were when we stepped away)? “Easy” I say. “We’re just choosing to be poor.”

Poor financially — rich in all the things that really matters.

Re: How Old Are We?

We know Orion Jim and can assure you that he sails a lot younger than his age. Go Jim!

I just turned 70 and, like most folks, am getting stiffer in the joints. I have noticed that, after a week of spring commissioning, including a lot of crawling around tight spaces to access equipment for maintenance, I'm more flexible . - a very good thing indeed.

So, if you want to improve your flexibility, buy a boat (though a physical therapist may be a lot cheaper).

Cheers!

I may have retired at 57 but I’m 63 now. Time flies when you’re having fun. I agree that our boat ownership does much to improve our physical well being. I fatten up in the dead of winter and thin back down throughout the sailing season.

34 hear, and my wife is 30.

I was going to suggest a healthy regimen of swimming, biking, and running (triathlon baby !) and yoga for flexibility and mobility. But it sounds like cabin crawling may do the trick.

Re: How Old Are We?

I age really depends on whether you ask my mind of my body.

How old do people's mind think they are compared to their bodies?

My mind still thinks I'm 35 and that gets my 58 year body in trouble lots of times.
