How Many Have Sailed Offshore

I've "sailed" offshore, San Diego to Syndey with stops in Hawaii, American Samoa, Fiji, and New Caledonia. I will say it is absolutely beautiful off shore. I even found the rough days to be absolutely beautiful, something about sitting in the darkness looking at 10-15ft waves and watching the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises you could ever imagine. Ok so that was on a 777ft cruise ship. But I cannot wait to get out there on my own.

In the meantime the actual furthest distance offshore in which I have sailed my own boat is about 60 miles. Don't really have a reason to go any further than that yet as there's not much out there.

Sailing appeals to people for different aspects of the experience. For me, its a mix of "sailing" be it motoring or by wind, and getting somewhere under my own steam and navigation. 2 or 3 days with no shore time and Im bored........
A bit longer if I have to or have a good reason.

We have never been interested in a circumnavigation, but when we were younger and still full of piss and vinegar we used to talk about cruising to the Med or doing the milk run from California to Hawaii. That was when we thought we would be retiring at a much younger age.

Lance got to see a lot of the world and spent more than 50% of his time at sea during his 12 years in the Navy. He has earned his shellback a few times over. He taught sailing at the Naval Academy for 3 years and so got offshore miles taking the midshipmen on their summer cruise to Bermuda each year.

I have never been more than 30 miles offshore, the distance from Long Beach to Catalina Island. All my miles have been around the island of Oahu, along the coast of southern California, and in the Chesapeake Bay, so far. Years pass and we start to go a little easier on ourselves. I have frankly lost interest in being underway for days on end.

Our retirement plan now is the Intracoastal, the Florida Keys and however far into the Caribbean we make it before we don't want to go anymore. In our new modified idea of cruising, the ultimate for us would be to get to Barbados. My husband's father is from there and he still has a lot of family there that he hasn't seen in a long time. One of his cousins has a marina and we would just love to pull in there someday. But that just may be a dream at this point. Even the relatively nominal passages involved to get there may be more than we want to do by that point. We shall see.

It's quite possible that I will never qualify as an offshore sailor. Lance will have to tell me what it's like to belong to the club.

Its exactly the same as not belonging only with a badge.
Sailing is about doing what YOU or I want in our own way and time and speed.

...... its 3:05 am here in the UK... just finishing a 15 hour watch for a friend emergency clinic and flicking through all the threads on the forum in between patching people up... its not even Friday night for goodness sake! Why cant they save the bottles for then instead of hitting people on a thursday.

If the criteria is 200 miles, then I qualifiy. BUT.. I hasten to add i do not feel I qualify as a "sailor". Done heaps of big boat trips as a passenger, but always feel Ive missed or forgotten some basic thing when I go out myself. I said all that somewhere. I genuinely figure someone who has coastal sailed for 5 or more years has a good grasp on sailing...... getting in and out of harbours takes some navigating at times... tides and sh#t.. stuff like that.

Old guys round here who sail coastal know stuff that is amazing. I get the greatest kicks of a 70+ plus year old calling me "son" and me in my 50s!! lol... Learn so much from them.
