Rsmith3: I recommend the www.morganscloud.com for getting a real good feel for learning all about ocean cruising. Excellent articles on all aspects, except the technique of sailing, because that needs to be a given. I recommend you do, once you are ready for the longer trips, a First Aid course and particularly a Sea Survival course with time spent int the water. The latter really made clear to me what systems we want onboard, how difficult it is to get into a liferaft, how miserably uncomfortable a liferaft is, how my lifejacket works and how to inspect and repack it, the effects of cold water shock, risk of secondary drowning and many other things. Very useful stuff IMHO.

Your reaction and demean a becomes second nature, that gut feeling is what keeps you safe and that I agree comes from learning from the experienced but it can't always be taught

Glad you posted, I've enjoyed the thread

So you are a farrier as well?? Yup you might be one of the few who can relate to my boat name.. Gaitweigh

Re: How Many Have Sailed Offshore

In SCUBA diving the first 32 feet are the hardest , in sailing the first ten or fifteen miles are the hardest , after that it all looks the same . Why did you pick 200 miles ?
The O. P. said that there was not very many out there , wrong , many places you will not find any where to anchor . Several thousand boats will cross the Atlantic each year , many thousand boats will make the trip stateside to the Carib each year .

I suspect those numbers are a little off.

So I'm wondering how many have sailed past the 200 mile mark
Why 200? miles If it was any it could have been 20

Re: How Many Have Sailed Offshore

Long time lurker but I recently re-registered b/c I couldn't remember spit about my old registration.
Only 15,000+ miles offshore. Several different boats. Mostly races to Bermuda, a few deliveries to/from the islands and one TransAtlantic.
I wonder how many of the naysayers have ever been out of sight of land. Or lived on a boat.
