Re: Home base: Florida or Puerto Rico?

Ohhh...My.. what a decision! In 8 yrs.??? Uhm.. Keep an eye on will be the 51st State as soon as it opens. Run there. You wont regret it. (is an option) Uhmm.. grrr.. PR sorry to say it, will be part of Dominican Republic. Yeap! Hate to say it but is true. The taxes will kill you. Everything said here is true. Go to the west side of Florida. Is going to be cheaper soon. (Cuba?)(remember). You will have good places to to choose from. Tampa area is best. (my opinion) You can go anywhere from here. West, South, North...ok it takes longer to go east but it can be done to. An all this from a liveaboard who has gone all over the Caribbean. Presenthly in St. Pete...heading south again in November to explore with patience the west side of Sto. Domingo. 8 yrs. is a long time. Best wishes

Re: Home base: Florida or Puerto Rico?

I live in SWFL. We have tons of gulf access houses with sailboat access. Houses are still pretty cheap here and you are allowed to dock your boat as long as it fits between your property line which it will at that size. Look in Cape Coral, They have the most gulf access homes in SWFL for the best price. We have great fishing and its a straight shot to key west 180 S. Set auto pilot and learn a new song on the guitar! let me know if you need a Realtor, I have a few buddies that can help you out.

Tired of the snow and river sailing. Wife and I are looking at moving to St. Petersburg in '17 (house will be paid off). We're flying down next month to check it out. Wouldn't mind buying a local a beer while discussing the local sailing. Chris

A very interesting city, and the St. P's YC must be on a piece of property worth an incredible sum. I'd say to make a point to contact them while you are at it.

Your house money will go farther in PR, there are a lot of services and amenities available, lots of flights to the U.S., no passport needed, good local cruising and it makes a great jumping off point for further cruising.
