Help us Name our Boat

Howdy Folks,

As mentioned in other threads my wife and I are in the process of buying an Island Packet 40. Of course we've been talking about names for a while but it just hit me that if we close on this boat we'll have to come up with a name for the coast guard paperwork. We'd really like a name that means something to both of us put to be brutally honest...we're just not all that creative.

We're both Network Engineers buy trade. For the technical folks here, we're both CCIE's and since IP (Internet Protocol) has been our bread and butter for so long and most folks abbreviate Island Packet as IP...we'd really like to come up with a name that plays off of that.

So I figured what the hell, let's bounce this off the collective and see if y'all can make up for our lack of creativity.

If we don't come up with anything better, our standby is "Gypsy Soul" which captures what interests us both in the cruising life style to begin with...it's also part of a great Texas country song but I digress.

Hey, you can't miss with the ole standbys, you know:

XTC, Wet Dreams - that kind of thing.

Seriously, you are moving into dangerous territory asking this bunch to name your vessel.

When my siblings and I named our first sailboat, we named her after our mother. By coincidence, her name is the name of the daughter of Poseidon - "Evadne". We cherish her memory. She (both) has protected us.

The original name of the vessel I am currently reconstructing will remain her name. I ain't taking any chances.

Fair Winds (another good name)

Not appropriate probably, but maybe: IP Freely?

I'll go back into my cave now.

Re: Help us name our boat

Congratulations on your new boat! Island Packet builds great boats.

One thing I encourage people to consider when naming a boat is how easy will it be to identify over the radio, be it HF or VHF. I would definitely discourage the name 'Pay Day'. On the other hand, 'India Papa' would be easy to understand but lacks much meaning. Somewhere I read that 3-syllable boat names are easiest to understand but I can't remember where I read that.

Quite a few boats are named after stars of which I like the concept but there are so few pretty star names. Birds are another popular source of boat names but that makes them almost routine. Adjectives are frequent seen on boats, especially those from the UK - think Steadfast, Resolute, etc.

I find the innuendos towards bodily functions to be immature and sophomoric.

When we picked out the granite for our galley, the one we chose was named 'Luna Pearl' and I always thought that would make a great name for a boat. No ties to information industry or to Island Packet.

Enjoy your new boat. May you always find . . .

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Help us name our boat

Check out the NOAA website concerning USCG documented boats. I wouldn't choose a common name, nor a silly/cute one, but one that has meaning to you and won't sound confusing or embarressing in conversation or on the radio.

Something simple like "Bob" has a certain appeal to me although it is surprisingly common.
