Heck Yeah, I Singlehanded!

I know some of you guys are crusty old salts who won't be impressed but I'm stoked! Charlotte and Cora (my mega-pregnant wife and two year old) had to step out for this leg of the trip (pregnancy....), so I solo'd Baja.

I'm chilling in Cabo San Lucas on the hook for a couple of days to grab some fuel and food.

Longest passages I've ever done by myself! I have solo anchoring (with a manual windlass, 60lb anchor, all chain, by the way) down to a science!

Woohoo!

Scariest part: waking up from sleeping and having that brief "I wonder what broke on deck or is there a cruise ship 10' away from me" feeling.

Re: heck yeah i singlehanded!

Congratulations!! I am also impressed. I single-handed my boat for the first time in September, and it scared the carp out of me (at, least, the idea of doing it did, prior to setting off). But my single-handed odyssey wasn't the whole Baja peninsula - it was just a little Solent day sail from Hamble to Yarmouth! When I berthed up to the wall on the town quay in Yarmouth, a crowd gathered to watch me bugger it up! Praise be to Neptune, that I did not!

My Dad, in his 80's, single hands all the time, in fair weather or foul. For me it's a new and intimidating activity

Re: Heck Yeah, I Singlehanded!

Well done Rebel.
Best way to really bond with your boat, and understand what every creak and change of motion means.
Not to mention a slight feeling of satisfaction?
I remember my first overnight solo, having to get a swamped dinghy on board at midnight. Slept well when I finally got anchored.

Re: Heck Yeah, I Singlehanded!

I was thinking about you today and here you are.
Congrats on the solo stuff, it's the bestest as far as I'm concerned.

What's next?

Re: Heck Yeah, I Singlehanded!

The first pee on land, did you find yourself wavering? Congrats Eric, your leg was my first time too. I'll bet your on the hook after finding out what a slip goes for.

Congrats! That's very impressive! You should be stoked! Hate that unsettling nightmare of something going on while you're below.... I try to sleep mostly during the day and keep nights for staying alert. Hate the nightime surprises. Daylight make them easier to figure a solution. I also have an egg timer to wake me on schedule. That and perimeter alarms.

Where you headed to next?

Re: Heck Yeah, I Singlehanded!

Hey Dockhead, that's a challenging bit of navigating around the corner with tides and sandbanks, good on ya. I came down from the centre of Ireland single handed to the Med and after all those locks I was as fit as a butchers dog. My biggest mistake ? drinking lots of tea and getting caught single handed in a force 5/6 with no autopilot ! I bought a big juice bottle with a wide neck (bragging again) and screw top for the next leg.

Re: Heck Yeah, I Singlehanded!

Good one mate, its a great feeling being out there by your self,

You want to try dragging an anchor up with no windlass, It keeps you fit,

Those things that go bump in the night certainly wake you up, hahahahaha
