A 14-foot mini-cruiser is minimalist. A 19ft is comfortable, and anything much larger than a 25 borders on ostentatious.

Welcome here by the way! If that is your first boat you really swung for the fence on that one! Nice choice!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Yes, I confess, I am hoping the classics don't disappear... chopped up in desert lots for their encapsulated lead! I was going through Marchaj's book "Sail Performance" and I thought all you classic owners and wannabe owners would appreciate this quote, page 77, Fig. 59:

"Crossbreeding of the ocean-going yacht with a sailing dinghy does not appear to be promising from the viewpoint of seaworthiness. Unseaworthy behavior in heavier wind is more the rule than the exception with boats built to the IOR or IMS rules. It is not only the strong, active crews of racing yachts who bear the brunt of current design trends - it is also the cruising folk who are directly influenced by the racing fashion. Although the great builders and designers of the past had an intuitive feel as to how to build seaworthy craft (now in danger of extinction,) the concept of balancing speed against safety and seaworthiness appears to be losing ground." ( my emphasis )

If more of the younger folks knew and understood this, the classics might be saved from extinction...

BTW, 96 members in the Plastic Classics group! When we hit 100 you are all invited down to my boat for a cold beer! But bring your old clothes.. I just have a few things I need a little help with... really, it'll only take a minute...

Well, ok, we hit 100! I've got the Trader Joe's beer, if you want another brand you'll have to let me know. I have the sandpaper and paintbrushes ready too!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

I do not have any skills in posting pics on the thread but I just uploaded a pic of Gitana after Newton. Our CheoyLee Offshore 38 came through the storm like she was born for it. (just lucky). She even still has her resident bird nest in the spreaders. If you take a look, Gitana is in the center.
