Re: Got a plastic classic?

Haven't looked for a while, but I think I put about a thousand lbs

My Reliant has about 1700 lbs of lead internally. 700 down in the wineglass, and the 1K up around the mast. Phil Rhodes acknowledged that the glass boats were lighter due to the construction material difference. I have both wood and glass drawings, and its pretty obvious that all the wood in the forward section, in comparison to the relatively simple glass bow assembly, would have better trimmed the forward sections down. Changing from that main tree to an aluminum mainmast should require some trim changes. All else remaining the same, removing Blue's mainmast raises her WL by 4" at the stem.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

My other classic plastic. Tornado hull number 186. I think this was built late 60's. It came on a UK built trailer. I upgraded to the new rule. Including a spinnaker launcher. It was a wreck when I got her. Delaminated decks & lots of PO not appropriate revisions. This is the fastest boat at any sail point I have ever sailed. I was shocked when the IOC removed Tornado from Olympic racing AND did not replace it with any multi-hull. I have raced against many modern go-fast cats. I regularly kick their buts into the next county. This is a really fast piece of high tech. In a fair breeze, I race the patio boats on the lake.

watch the acceleration at 50 sec.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Those boats and NACRAs are just pure high octane FUN! So much so I have entertained a fantasy of getting a NACRA here and using it to go cruising! A couple of dry bags, a tent over the boom?

There is one Nacra on the lake. I like to tease him into a race and then smoke him. Having a Tornado is like having the only supersonic jet in a dogfight.

Between '64 and '84 partnership/owned a PantherCraft, A Jerry Houlton WEST SYSTEM, and 2 Reg White boats. Raced in the Tornado Worlds in Bermuda in '74 and '86. Will always maintain that the early Tornado was the most fun ever to be had on the water. FLY TORNADO !! was THE message.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Maybe it's just my mid-life craving to return to youth, but I really DIG listening to Dave Brubeck and Stan Getz on my '62 classic. Now if I could just find a convertible Dart with the push button automatic to go with it...

Wow, that is a lot more up-scale than I was thinking, but I like it! And that junk-rigged schooner, very interesting. I have never sailed a junk rig and I have always been curious about them.

Hi Don--
We looked at 2 beautiful Rhodes in the Seattle area last spring before buying a different boat north of there. The Bounty 2 in Port Angeles is a really excellent one, with custom woodworking inside that is exceptional. Great people too, who are moving on with a different phase of life there now and willing to work with selling it. For us, the boat wouldn't work because we needed it shipped to Alaska, and without many features we would have needed it was cost prohibitive for that reason, but if you don't need all the updates right away, it's a wonderful boat the way it sits.

I know that boat from its photos, that interior looked gorgeous. I wish you had told me the boat was a nightmare and the folks unreasonable! I am only in the "dreaming of a Rhodes" stage.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Here's a picture of my Plastic Classic, a 1969 Westerly Nomad (before she was stolen in 2006). I got her back in 2013, but she's not as pretty now.

It will take a bit of cleaning and a little resto work, but she'll be fine.

Hope you post some shots of the restoration work for us. I've never seen a Westerly. I hear they are stout boats!
