Re: Got a plastic classic?

I'm interested in the Buchan 37... I love in Everett. (Do you have a link)?

I have a '72 Buchan 37 and a '70 (ish) Aleutka 25. My main regret is that I do not have the skills to do all the work myself. If I did I might be working on 4 boats.
The Buchan 37s Isuzu diesel has been rebuilt, the deck and hull re-painted, new berths, the keel bolts replaced, rudder re-built etc. Unfortunately when finished she will have to be sold. Anyone in the PNW interested in buying a fast cruiser that literally can sail circles around a Hunter 35. I have the pics to prove it.
The Aleutka 25 is getting a new galley, water tank, nav lights, deck and hull repainted, berths, solar panel, etc Hopefully she will soon be ready for the Baja.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

My second boat, purchased in the 80s, was a 1969 Irwin 27. It was a CB and sailed very well. Next was a 1970 C&C 35 MKI. We raced it quite successfully for many years. Now that we are settling down to cruising again, we bought a 1971 Morgan 35. (1969, 1970 then 1971). Looks like a pattern. I love the lines of all 3 which are quite similar. The C&C was faster, but the Morgan has all the cruising comforts. I can't wait to launch her in the spring!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Finally, got to drive my Hallberg RASSY 33 mistrial Monday. Drove to moss landing Ca, last Thursday. Pulled the boat Friday, spent the rest of Friday, and 1/2 of Saturday sanding and painting the bottom.

Remarkably the bottom was in fantastic shape. Painted the bottom,,and repainted the bottom. Then used a fork lift on site, to hoist the rebuilt motor and put her in the boat.

plumbed the motor,,replaced two batteries, and waited for the crane on Monday.

Back in the water, fired her off, and motored around Monterey bay for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

A lot of work in a short period of time.

I'm home in Oregon now, and frankly I can't move. I'm hurting.

And I got a call from Brookings Or. Marina today telling me I have a mooring if I want it. Had to turn it down. Got 60 ish days before im ready for that journey up the coast.

Moss landing is 3200.00 a year more then Brookings. A substantial savings. O well I'll be ready next time.

Congratulations! I know how much work that all is but you must feel a tremendous relief and sense of satisfaction too!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

I'm surprised I haven't seen another on this thread yet, but I can add a Tayana 37 #275. No teak decks all new standing rigging, new CS prop, new heat exchanger on the Perkins with rebuilt trans and new exhaust, and will be replacing running rigging in the spring when/while I bring it home. Then I'll tackle the bowsprit this fall

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Have had my Alberg 35 for quite a few years now. Many of the previous repairs and upgrades mentioned in this thread sound very familiar indeed. I have lots of info. on various jobs on the A35 if anyone needs help renovating/upgrading. Nice thread.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

I finally posted some pictures of our 1969 Tartan 34, hull #77. It has been a 3 year journey so far, and I expect at least a couple more before we get her to where we want. It would be faster, but my wife has one rule: during the season( which is much too short here) the boat has to be ready to use, cosmetic work only. Smart lady!

You might consider adding your thoughts and notes to the Plastic Classic social group for reference for other A35 owners:

Re: Got a plastic classic?

FYI for anyone looking for a Pearson Triton in southern California:
https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/boa/6015431200.html

Looks pretty nice. He took the engine out so it may be a good candidate for a Baldwin (Atom Voyages) style re-fit for an outboard in a well. Has a trailer available too.

Re: Got a plastic classic?

I see folks have been joining the Plastic Classics social group but have not posted their greetings. That's no way to get the oven mitt, winch covers and matching lobster bib!
Let us know who you are and what inspires your crazy affection for the classics!

Re: Got a plastic classic?

Great thread, I just found it!

I own a plastic classic, a Sparkman & Stephens design called Bluebird 25. Some sailors on the western side of the Atlantic may know the same design as North Star 500, but this one, along with a small number of sisterships, was built in Finland in the 1970's and 1980's. Ours is one of the first built, dating back to 1972.

It's an IOR design with an extremely beamy hull, not the fastest boat you'll find but sails great and points high, and above all is a very steady and safe boat for the kind of offshore sailing that the Baltic Sea offers.

We bought the boat a year ago, with the intent of practicing on something small and inexpensive before getting a bigger boat. Now we're looking forward to our second summer sailing. I've been writing a blog about our progress called Compass Heading 180°. More about the boat on the same website[/URL].

She looks great from a distance! That's my rule too, but I am not getting much cosmetic work done either! So I have to keep getting farther away when I take pictures of her.
