Don't buy a mid-range set unless you know that's what he wants.

In general, I don't recommend buying any sort of accessory for a professional or serious enthusiast of any hobby, unless it's something you know they want.

I think you should not give a token material object in honor of a person's giving up of all non-essential material belongings.

I would not buy him something that was decorative only (aka useless!) - space is at a premium on a boat (very limited for displaying "nice" things and even for storage)......and for me an antique style Compass would fit into that, especially as not an original! Will live in storage onboard at best........

I would also hesitate to get him anything useful without first checking as he may either not want the item or already have better (at least to him).

Given that the budget is fairly decent (IRO $500? rather than 50 bucks and a card!) if you can't wheedle the info out of him then I would straight up ask for a couple of options, including a sextant - and E-bay for s/h is a good (and acceptable) option.

For a purely sentimental item, how about a small brass "badge" with a message engraved? A badge like that can be installed at eye level anywhere on the boat without taking up space, and will easily blend with the boat's style and decor.

I know I am a little late. Two inexpensive Ideas.
1. Leatherman Surge
2. Streamlight PRO Tac 1L. (with a 12 pack of L123 Batteries).
