AIS and or radar. The technology is constantly evolving, but these are wonderful safety items that their boat may not have or have and be outdated.

I agree in asking them first. Make whatever you get for them something THEY WANT/NEED.

While asking what they need on the boat is a good idea, I think the financial situation might drive what you needed do. If it is a major institution then his retirement should be adequate to go with, I would do more of a memorable thing. If the situation is a little tighter a couple of round trip tickets might be good. They could come back to see family and the college once they have been out a while. If no heath insurance a year or two of medical insurance would be good.

No decorative or bulky items. Sailboats have very limited space for things like decorative plaques and pretty wooden boxes.

For someone like this, a useful and consumable gift is best. A bottle of good wine or WestMarine gift card might be good.

It should not be anything to be put on a mantle, hung on a wall, or set on a table unless it is already on the Admiral's procurement list!

I would like to receive a bon voyage party, if it was me - nothing more. Good wishes from good friends are the best anyone living that lifestyle can ever hope to get.

It looks to me like they'd be separate purchases. But there's only a handful of them, and they all cover different aspects of preparing a boat, a bank account and a pair of lives to go to sea.

My original suggestion was digital copies, because of the space issue on a boat, but thinking about that, such a gift would have to line up with whatever digital reader (or lack thereof) he already has.

I totally vote for the best pair of binoculars you can afford. I know that I would never have spent the money for stablized when we were first getting off the dock, but after 6 years and 14000 miles of cruising, I eventually broke down myself and spent the money, but not after having many times that I had WISHED I had them. Get him a gift that he would not buy himself but that he would use EVERY day. Every time he looks through them he will be grateful for your choice and remember you as well.

I suggest a Barograph [ a seven day paper chart recording barometer] with a nice engraved plaque. He will also enjoy it in his house when his cruising days are over. I love mine !! Bruce.

Today I found myself on the receiving end of such a gift. After seventeen years at the helm of a small business I have clocked off for the last time, sold all my posessions and am moving aboard a boat.

When my office manager told me yesterday to expect something from the staff today, I was worried I was not going to be able to fit it on the boat. As it happens it was exactly what I needed - a Davis sextant. I'm not sure if they had beem following my ebay bidding activity or just know this old fool too well - but they certainly hit the spot!!!

Buy the DVD, "Celestial Navigation Simplified" by William F. Buckley. Get another friend or two to buy a nice metal sextant on Ebay. And get other friends to buy the current year air almanac and site reduction tables.

Lol, no we haven't even purchased the gift yet.

On that note, I discussed gift options ya'll offered and my group seems set on an engraved antique style compass. Would be awesome to get him those great binoculars but $1300 is quite a lot of money.

Can somebody explain the price ranges along with each ranges' features and capabilities for binoculars?

Would a ~$500 set be very nice or are we better letting him spend the money on a better set?

Anyhow, a student organization I belong to, along with another, are planning on getting him a gift in appreciation of his service and dedication to the college. Rather than something very common like a plaque or something mundane, I'd like to make sure he gets something he can bring with him on his ship and appreciate on a daily basis.

As I've never sailed and don't know much about sailing in general, I figured I'd ask ya'll what you thought might be a good idea for a gift. A plaque is fine if its nautically themed but I'd rather see him get something different, maybe accompanied with a plaque.

Hit me with your best ideas

Btw, I should mention he's a professor in our department - not the dean of our college as I originally said (I must have been tired).
