I am tempted to say joking about a very serious issue must piint to something, some kind of not being able to cope with the seriousness of the issue. But I know we have to blow of steam, only I don't need CF for that, lots of bars around everywhere!
The freedom of movement, restrictions of increasing terror treat are indeed very serious, at least for us liveaboard cruisers who do go out to less developed areas of the globe.

I see .govs as more of threat to freedom of movement vs any pirate/terror threat. Increased regulations, fees and intrusion into day to day life (boarding) being the actions I fear. I don't think it will hold me back completely from traveling but it will certainly cross some countries off my list as too much trouble or too expensive.

Living in the Netherlands I can't say much has changed since Paris.
Lots of talk about closing the borders, but the reality is that there is nobody paying much attention to who crosses what border.
Hard to even notice you've actually crossed a border - usually, only the language on the traffic signs gives it away (talking about the Dutch borders with Germany and Belgium).
(No wonder they never know where the people on the watch lists are ... doh ).

As far as cruising goes: these days, you pretty much know within a day if a local even looks funny at a cruiser. We all know where the "hot spots" are, what regions are (politically) unstable, and we can all decide for ourselves where we want to go, and what areas / countries we want to avoid.

Some people take every report or rumor very seriously, others not so much. I think we all need to decide for ourselves what we're comfortable with -- and accept crime is everywhere.
However, for most of us, the risks on land in our own homelands are higher then most countries we sail to when it comes to the chances of being robbed etc.

As to being boarded: I'd rather not, but it happens. Even happens to Dutch yachts coming back from a short trip to the UK - it is part of sailing. Being where I am, we regularly have Customs cruising around in the marina. Usually nice guys, some lack a sense of humor. Same with the Police boats.

Again, we know what regions are unstable and where officials are less ... courteous then we might like. Up to us if we want to go there or not.
In all honesty, this has always been a fact of life and always will be. I personally am more annoyed at the hassles when flying somewhere then anything else.

There are currently 0 locations on my "to avoid" list. I'd probably avoid the Gulf of Aden, but since that's nowhere near my planned route I can't say I'm keeping a very close eye on what's going on in that region. Morocco is still very much on my "to visit" list

It has become obvious after recent terrorist attacks from Paris to Jakarta that we indeed have to be much more aware of the threat now seemingly spread from Europe to Africa to Asia to USA...... Any foreigner seems to be possible target, for sure yachtsmen and women are obviously standing out moored or anchored around the coasts, ports of the world. The argument that not much has changed for us cannot be uphekd anymore. All the same I for one will keep liveaboarding where I consider it possible but with much more watchfullness.

You guys have all got to be kidding. Paranoid and sometimes I wonder how many of you really go very far, I do know Boatman does but the rest - give me a break.
In 8 years we have sailed over 30,000nm visited over 40 countries and hundreds of ports. Never had an issue or concern.

If I listened you guys I would be in the concrete bunker with my arsenal waiting for doomsday instead of out here enjoying the world and all it has to offer.

Stop watching the d@#$ tv and get a life. It is sure as heck a lot safer out here than many places.

Spot on.. I find the locals I come across in my travels don't give a crap about the outside world and the 'Crazies'.. there's more important things to concern them.. the next Fiesta usually..!!
