faria temperature gauge failure.

I have a Trawler with two helms utilizing 2 faria #12812 temp gauges. The upper gauge does not flicker when the ignition is turned on. The lower gauge, and its replacement, immediately go to 150 deg when the ignition is turned on. The gauges are wired properly. Any suggestions as to what is going on with the lower gauge problem? The upper one also for that matter. The replacement gauge was installed in the upper helm and goes to 150deg when the ignition is turned on. The "non flickering" gauge is in the lower helm, and still does not move when the ingition turns on. I am taking "her" for a short sea trial tomorrow.

Testing Temperature Gauges:

1. Disconnect Tan Sender Wire from Gauge (Terminal “S”) and turn Instrument Power ON.
The Temperature Gauge should indicate ZERO Scale (< Low Temperature).

2. Short the Gauge Sender Terminal “S” to Ground Terminal “G”.
The Gauge should deflect to FULL Scale (> High Temperature).

3. Measure Resistance from Tan Sender Wire (disconnected from Gauge) to Ground.
American Temp. Senders will read: 450 Ohms (Engine Cold @ 100F)
or 29.6 Ohms (Engine Hot @ 250F )
European Temp. Senders will read: 281 Ohms (Cold @ 40C) and 22 Ohms (Hot @ 120C)

4. Disconnect Tan Wire from Sender on Engine Block.

5. Test continuity of Tan Wire.
Zero Ohms from Block End to Gauge End - If not, repair or replace Wire.


6. Measure Resistance from Sender Terminal (on Block) to Ground on Block.
Should read as per (3) above - If not, replace Sender.

I don't believe the gauges are wired properly if they display 150 degrees with the ignition on and the engine cold. They are wire incorrectly or the wrong senders have been installed.


If you bought this boat used, a previous owner may have screwed something up. If you bought it new or the gauges worked correctly when you bought it, look back and examine what work you might have done to cause this problem.

JP, I just replaced our Faria analog gauges with CruzPro digital gauges. If your tests suggest your sendors are working correctly and the gauges are both at fault... that's one solution. Another is that I now probably have two unused Faria gauges (2" white Chesapeake style) that could become available
