Dutch Sailor Missing in the Atlantic

On January 15th 2014 Dutch sailor Sietse Hagen left the port of Tenerife heading for the Caribbean islands. Since his departure, now over 60 days ago, he has not reported home. His friends and family, as well as the Dutch sailing community, are deeply concerned about the well-being of this very experienced sailor. He has been reported missing at the local authorities, but your help by keeping a lookout for his boat would be very much appreciated.
Sietse is sailing a 27ft Gib'Sea Flush Poker named ‘Pokerface’, small but well prepared for long voyages. Distinctive properties are its doghouse and black painted stern (photos below).

If you have any information that could help finding Sietse please contact me by PM or your local police.

Re: Dutch sailor missing in the Atlantic

I hope Mr. Hagen is somewhere safe and is just out of communication. Looks like a boat in good condition.

Re: Dutch sailor missing in the Atlantic

Its not a 20 day trip for a 27 footer.

2,400nms at 2 knots = 50 days. Yep thats overdue for me.

The 2 kts is just what i tell family as my overdue date. On shprter passages add a day for stuff around time after the breakage.

Re: Dutch sailor missing in the Atlantic

I hope he turns up soon. Perhaps he's simply not contacted people. Internet users tend to expect constant input, but someone who is out cruising may be more tuned in to the influences of the wind, sea, and inclinations of his own. Not everybody likes being under the microscope of the internet.

Re: Dutch sailor missing in the Atlantic

Thanks for your replies. Some issues may need some clarification:

- Sietse estimated a 20 day voyage, with a maximum of 40 days. Previously he has made a long ocean going trips with this boat, so he is familiar with the performance to expect. Before that, he has sailed the world with other boats, so he's no beginner.

- Sietse was a very frequent visitor and poster on the Dutch sailors' forum, on previous trips he kept us updated when and where possible. Now he has not even contacted his close family, also quite contrary to his habits.

These circumstances make it very unlikely that he has chosen himself to keep silent.

Please keep a lookout for any sign.

Did he have EPIRB or other communication gear?

I don't think so. He had his own vision on that type of thing. He had a handheld vhf, but I think that's about it.

I might be wrong however as I didn't follow the avalanche of comments that followed his disappearing on the dutch forum. In which case I do appologize.

Re: Dutch sailor missing in the Atlantic

Orchidius is right, as far as we know he has no means of communication other than a handheld VHF. He strongly believed in self supporting and not to endanger anyone but himself in case of emergency. We respect this opinion, and the consequenses it may have, but it does not mean we cannot ask the world sailing community for help.

She looks like a stout little boat in excellent shape... Wishing all the best outcomes for this overdue passage....

Re: Dutch sailor missing in the Atlantic

I have posted the info regarding the missing sailor and his boat to the Women Who Sail page on Facebook as well. I know there are a lot of members currently in the Caribbean. I hope Mr. Hagen will be found safe and well.
