Dutch Sailor Missing in the Atlantic

drifting at 1 knot with a broken mast for say 50 days(1200nm),after sailing for say 10(1000nm),still puts him on the atlantic side of the caribean.

Just when I start thinking, "maybe I could buy a boat in the next year or two and sail away", I read a thread like this about an experienced sailor missing at sea and I think..."maybe not".

Read the papers, thousands of people are getting killed in cars everyday...does that cause you to sell your car and start taking the bus. When people that I know see things like this, they tell me I'm nut's for planning my voyages, these are the same people that have been saying these same things to me my whole life, I have never even considered listening to these people, they don't have a clue about why we do the things we do, so I just tell them that not everybody is the same, and suggest that they stay on the porch.

i'm not saying don't go sailing in the least,just be aware that it is not all palm trees and rum punches.

considering there are in total only about 25000 vessels actively cruising at any one time, it seems like an almost weekly occurance that we hear about the loss of a vessel,abandonment or death.

You are comparing apples to oranges here. Risk number are many orders of magnitude different if you compare incidents (loss of vehicle/boat, deaths, etc.) for man hours in a car versus man hours open ocean/blue water cruising.

Valid point. Anyone got a handle on that statistic? Seems like something insurance actuaries would know.

Fear is a crazy thing and it seems depending on how we were raised its a big factor as we age. It stops us from doing some pretty cool stuff. It keeps us working for someone else rather than starting our own business. It even stops us from finding an ideal mate sometimes. What we fear most is of course the unknown but once we have been exposed to something that fear diminishes. A little fear is good because it keeps us on our toes but do your best to put some of it aside and just go and try some new stuff even if statistically its more dangerous than sitting in your easy chair. I'll bet you a high salt junk food diet and sitting in front of a computer with no exercise is a hell of a lot more dangerous than sailing offshore.
