I think Live Chat would diminish the quality of the forum quite a bit.. to my mind the way the threads work now is live enough and all inclusive.. a sharing of opinions, knowledge, humour and occasional stupidity that all can appreciate and maybe learn from..
Facebook.. Skype.. Messenger are all available and if folk want to make a more virtual friendship its simple enough to PM ones details to link up..
This format suits me just fine..

If it isn't BBM. it isn't nearly secure enough, and I don't even use BBM any more.

Unfortunately I do know a few politicians, and if they spend all their time on Facebook or Twitter, then that means they are spending far less time annoying the rest of us (I don't do either Facebook or Twitter, so don't really know what they heck they use, and could care less).
