Re: Do you worry about Pirates?
Yeah, this "pirate" stuff comes up periodically. There are very few places in the world that have issues with true organized piracy (like Somalia style). Most similar issues with cruisers are just dirt bags stealing stuff.
By far the most common incidents are petty theft, like dinghy motors, but worse stuff happens too: like armed robbery. Events that qualify as organized piracy are pretty uncommon.
OP: Visit CSSN for reports and mapping of actual crimes against cruising sail boats.

The only pirates I've met lately are the grocery stores in Raiatea.

Yeah, the dress up variety is the most likely type of pirate you will encounter in the Carib (except for the variety that works in boat yards and marinas!).
Ahrrr!

Americans with guns, far more frightening than imaginary pirates.

Those are the ones I worry about. The dress up pirate idiots and the ones that work in marinas.

I would hazard to say if there were more Americans with guns out there the few cases of piracy we've heard of would be more in line with "another pirate shot at sea while attempting a robbery". Plus it was Americans and others with guns that ended the Somali pirate threat. Australians and their fear of weapons and love for the Nanny state is what keeps me up at night.

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?
There has been pretty much ZERO piracy in the eastern Caribbean for numerous years. The last reported incidents were between Grenada and Trinidad near the oil platform in 2015. Those incidents were pretty serious as guns were involved.
However, there has not been an incident since then. We know multiple boats personally that made that passage this year (probably 10 or more). They had a great sail and are enjoying Trinidad's great boat services and excellent work. We plan to make that passage sometime this hurricane season.
The Eastern Caribbean is generally a very safe place. As has been said numerous times, petty theft is an issue everywhere. Using your head and ensuring things are locked up are essential. Your dinghy should be lifted and locked at night. Items on deck should be locked and secured. A motion sensing light in the cockpit is also a good idea (good LED battery operated motion lights are like $20 on Amazon. Batteries last a year). Just like you would in any city in North America, be smart.

Petty theft, if you're careless or make yourself a target, is always possible, but it isn't piracy. Check Noonsite before settling on destinations, and in general, divert your worry about piracy to the weather .

You don't hear about the Somali threat quite as much anymore. I was just pointing out that Americans with guns do have a place. Also as a non American it irks me that people are constantly and continuously taking pot shots at the US. We're talking about piracy so why did the guy before have to derail the thread by taking a jab. Like common people the virtue signalling is not impressive or particularly intelligent.
