Do you worry about Pirates?

I have read all sorts of horror stories about pirates.

Is this a regular concern you have when you sail?

only really in a few parts of the world that are easily bypassed unless you choose to sail there.

Is the Caribbean pretty safe?

I would think once you get south of Grenada it might become dangerous.

south of grenada is trinidad which is pretty safe,to the west is venezuela which is currently not very safe,though boats still visit some areas.
to the east is surinam guyana and brazil which are fairly safe but petty theft is generally more common than piracy on the high seas.

i hear detroit and chicago are pretty dangerous to visit these days

A pirate operates a chandlery not far from me. But when I need something, he has it. Just have to take out a second mortgage on the house. As Joe Hockey quipped, "next you'll want to end capitalism."

My big ship friends reckon the Gulf of Guinea is the current hotspot. See:

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

What people visualize, when they think "pirate" these days, is being run down on the open seas by a bunch of Somalis in a fast boat.

What there more likely to encounter is a teen swimming out to their boat in harbor, to see if he can steal their dinghy.

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

this is kind of like the old fear of bears while camping. in reality its extremely unlikely that anything would happen but. its also better safe than sorry. noonsite will give you a good heads up on danger zones. and with a bit of diligence you would be pretty safe.

i know many people turn off their ais in these areas. i've seen the pirates boats and im pretty sure they dont have ais receivers. turning running lights off at night and only sailing in these areas with rough seas are probably good ideas though

The latter is not piracy.

The term “piracy” is defined in UNCLOS (Article 101) as:
(a) any illegal acts of violence or detention, or any act of depredation, committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or a private aircraft, and directed-

(i) on the high seas, against another ship or aircraft, or against persons or property on board such ship or aircraft;
(ii) against a ship, aircraft, persons or property in a place outside the jurisdiction of any State;
(b) any act of voluntary participation in the operation of a ship or of an aircraft with knowledge of facts making it a pirate ship or aircraft;
(c) any act of inciting or of intentionally facilitating an act described in subparagraph (a) or(b).

Note the "crew or passenger or a ship or aircraft" and "high seas" or "outside the jurisdiction of any state"

No, it's not.
But it's far more likely to happen to you than for you to encounter pirates.
And any preparations you may have made in expectation of pirates are likely to be inappropriate.

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

Do I worry about pirates? But of course, with all the armed crew, naval patrols and air cover, it's damn hard for them to earn a living. Next thing you know they'll eschew piracy and want to move in next door and sell encyclopedias.

Seriously, if you pay attention and avoid the hot spots, there are much better things to worry about.

Do you worry about Pirates?

Something to think about if you sail in Asia. Sabah, Southern PI, Singapore straits perhaps. Just stay informed and stay away from known trouble areas.

Fair dinkum?

Last I heard from the ICC, piracy in SE Asia was at a minimum this calendar year to date. And mainly opportunistic theft and petty robbery in anchorages.

Check the ICC real time report at: https://www.icc-ccs.org/index.php/pi...-piracy-report

Re: Do you worry about Pirates?

In the Caribbean I worry more about armed robbery whilst at anchor, by drug fueled thugs than being boarded by pirates on the high seas. So from memory there have been instances of this in Nassau, St Vincent, Colombia but really not that common. As a per capita statistic I don't know how it would rate against say home invasion in the USA.
