Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
Worked perfectly in Atlantic and Med. Very useful for the family and friends to track the progress and communicate.

I have an inReach I no longer use. When I was working offshore it was GREAT for sending IM, email, updating Facebook, etc. it has a great tracking feature as well. The Earthmate ap is a pretty easy and intuitive interface, but since Garmin bought them out, I don't know what changes, if any, they may have implemented.
I used the seasonal plan and it worked out okay...I think it was around $40/ mo. for enough messages to be useful & you can pre-program 4 messages that you won't get charged for like: "Im fine, will be making port in a day or so, will call when I can"
There are annual fees and activation charges for all plans so go over them carefully.
Email me if you want to buy mine from me, it's the older model that everyone seems to like best and includes everything it came with. $200

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
We were heading back to the states with our buddy boat when my VHF died.
We both had a delorme and were able to text direct from delorme to delorme via satellite. I used my delorme to send a text to his inreach mail address.I am now a confirmed delorme fan.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
I think they are amazing! My friend Richard crossed the Atlantic both ways in a 42 foot single engine Trawler. I could send and receive text messages with him in the middle of the Atlantic!
You can see his track here: https://share.delorme.com/dauntless
He has crossed into the Pacific and is headed to Alaska and then Japan.

We also have been using the Spot. But seeing how much more versatile the In Reach is, I think if I had it to do again, I'd not buy the worthless Iridium sat phone and go with the Delorme instead.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
I've been thinking about buying an InReach, more for hiking than for cruising, and just wanted to say I really appreciate all the great information owners of those have shared here.
I can think of so many scenarios where even basic communication would be so advantageous over deciding whether or activate an epirb or not.

Lots of very useful replies.
30 dollars a month is no big deal. The one concern I have is un expected costs if you go over the limits on messages (sent or received). One of the dealers at a recent show in Seattle made it sound like the message costs could be a lot more than the monthly fee.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
To clarify my earlier: If I had it to do again, I would buy the InReach rather than the Spot and also NOT buy the Iridium satellite phone, which was expensive and proved absolutely worthless when we really needed it.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
Good morning every body,
Like a lot of people, we had a Spot, worked pefectly until Mexico. But now we are ready to sail to South Pacific, wich is out of coverage. So we bought a InReach Explorer. It's much more expensive then Spot, but for the price you get additional features (2 way SMS, Bluetooth, etc..). Problem is we didn't need these features because our further system was completed by a EPIRB, Satphone, SSB and pactor.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
Who do you contract with for data plans using the Delorme inReach Explorer? Thinking of getting a Delorme to prevent Garmin from charging for updating software. Imagine the Garmin offers maps not Delorme inReach Explorer. Will also get the micro USB Charging & Data Sync Cable for Delorme inReach Explorer to link to laptop. The Delorme inReach Explorer allows smart phone texting and weather viewing, yes? This may be our go to weather and com device offshore. We will probably have two of them. Thanks for a great site, click here for a beer.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
I'd second that. Truly world-wide coverage, helpful weather function (better than many, paid, "weather routers" actually) Use the plan which allows you to suspend service when not needed. Excellent deal.

It can be. The plan I use allows 40 messages per month, which is plenty for an offshore passage. However, every e mail/ txt address on any mailing list you set up is a separate message (not 1 message per list, but each person on that mailing list) I got around this my just sending tracking info to Facebook. Thus, 1 message per day, for 26 days, is within plan limits and no extra charge.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
That's strange, I thought the weather was the only problem on the InReach. You can't download files you just get very basic wave, wind and temp details stats.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.
I'm leaving tomorrow to do the ARC USA with an InReach in my kit.
Have used it many times before.
Works great and Delorme had great service
Pre Garmin, don't know what it's like now
On this passage I've signed up for the unlimited plan at 65.00 US
THE 40 message plan is 35 with overages at .50 each
So the break even point is 100 messages
35.00 gets you 40 then another 60 messages equal 30.00
Marine Weather is 1.00 per request
There is a setting on the InReach where you tell it how often to
"Listen to the satellite ". (Ping in cell phone land)
I've set mine to 30 minutes to conserve batteries
It's not instant texting like a cell phone unless you set it to constant
which will decrease battery life between charges
If any are interested in real world testing
PM me and I'll send you a link to my Mapshare page
Cheers
Neil
