Squeamish has nothing to do with it (for me), just a little respect for his next of kin, who didn't even know their loved one had been found, and the man himself.

I'm also not sure if the pics were released by the police or the many locals who were on that boat. How they treated the boat and everything on it ...

Anyway, if I die on my boat, I hope whomever finds me will not sell or release any pics. And not just pics of me, but also my personal belongings. There's a reason they're called personal belongings ...

Philippine police releasing the graphic photos does not surprise me as we see a lot of very raw footage on local TV, from road accidents and murders.

Perhaps the West is too squeamish by their standards.... I try not to judge...Here in the Philippines, taking animals to the slaughter house in open trucks is a normal daytime activity, which if I am following close behind in traffic, makes me Vegan for a while.

Personally, I am not bothered by the photos and see a poignant grace to a sailor's death at sea.

I am more bothered by the purposeful sinking by the locals to claim their prize.

Telling that both the body and boat survived at sea... before failing prey to the parasites on land.

Your stated purpose in posting seems a little 'far fetched' Pelagic. Do you really think CF is the way to be alerting family of a lost loved one?

Sorry; while I very much understand the sentiment, I always cringe when I read the inevitable 'he died doing what he loved' comments.

And funnily enough, when my father died at home, not (out) on his boat, nobody ever said that was just too damn bad for him; we got all the 'he was lucky he died surrounded by his loved ones' sentiments. Guess that no matter what, some people try to find a way to make it all sound less sad?

Its a bit different when your eighty plus in poor health, but when you are young like he was with a family, the sentiment is wongly placed iMO.

There is the difference between us. I don't think death is necessarily a "sad" thing, especially in the elderly. Although I find it difficult to describe, I believe there is a God/Creator to which we will return.

As a Catholic, I always liked when funeral cards gave two dates of the deceased. Born xx/xx/xx and Born into eternal life xx/xx/xx.

I think what is sad is not living life. So yes, I re-affirm my position that we would all be so lucky to die doing something we love.

This sailor was only 59. I just don't see the 'lucky' in his passing, sorry.

And no, death doesn't have to be sad or tragic or whatever - sometimes it's even a blessing. I've seen enough people die a horrible, slow death to know death can be a huge relief - for all involved. But when an otherwise healthy, not elderly person suddenly dies, calling them lucky seems a bit ... wrong.

My friends kid was only 12 when she died. She was doing something she loved, and she literally never knew what hit her. But I don't see the luck there either. So I guess you should be careful what you wish for, maybe ... I wish I could make it so no kid is ever that "lucky" again.

Im 54 (i think) and im about to start enjoying my sailing. I certainly dont think ill be too lucky if i cark it out 'doing what i love'. I have a wife i adore, a child still living at home and a dog, one of those weird special looking soppy dogs.
