Cruising cell phones

Lots of topics on what cell phone plan to pick when cruising but not much on which cell phone? I'm needing to upgrade my wife's phone and thought I would get one that we can take with us on our journey (whenever that starts).

As far as I can see, some of the requirements would be:

-Weather resistant
-Unlocked
-Network compatibility - what networks do other countries use?
-SIM card compatibility - are there some SIM cards that are not available in other countries, nano-SIM, micro-SIM, etc?

What are some other good features to have? Recommendations?

Re: Cruising cell phones

We purchased a blu, 5.5. On Amazon pretty cheap Its probably a bit dated now but we like the dual sim card slots. And separate SD card holder. Add a life proof or water proof case and ts a great boat phone. Totally unlocked and cheap enough to have a spare. We use Walmart straight talk plan in the us, $45. Month unlimited everything including hot spot, this year we have used it in Bahamas, Portugal and Spain problem free with local Sim cards and a 1 month plan. Lots of good phones I recommend find one unlocked. separate sim card from SD card slot, and one you can find a waterproof case for and a replacement batt, and a lot of memory

I didn't think about the replacement battery, that's a good idea.
