So I am well aware that my internet persona comes off as hostile, and abit mean spirted. I read thousands of threads and posts before even signing up. I really enjoy tech and building stuff, but the longer im here, the more i realize its a pretty small chunk. Most posts are all in the realm of basic hich school shop class (boating style). It seems there are a 100 or so knowledgeable people who answer th same questions over and over. You allmost never need to ask a question, because whatever it is, its been answered, figured out and is in the archives. I want to learn stuff, but get frustrated with endless anchor threads and the newbie "look at me, I bought a boat, I'm doing it too- what do I do now" threads. I know, I know, dont like so dont read it. But its like a huge car wreck, you gotta look, even if you dont want to.

The endless questions that have already been answered, endless discussion threads that end up being totally irrelevant...

It's sort of like a club, or a comfortable pub, where we all hang out and talk. Some of the conversations are old and repetitive. Some are new and interesting. But mostly we just enjoy each others company.

The only questions I really answer anymore are the ones that I have a unique angle on. Little kids on boats, the places in particular I've been too lately or have a lot of experience with, or some piece of gear. It's kind of funny because the more sailing you're doing the busier you are and the less Internet access you have.

I couldn't disagree more.

The questions might be the same but the answers constantly change. The world is not a static place. Sailing equipment is always improving and updating.
I'm currently in that.. Don't have a clue! stage and, yes, I search and read past replies but a lot of those aren't current for today's world.

Even if the answers are the same, for someone who many not have a question, it's often interesting to read what other are asking.

Nobody asks the questions that I have a unique angle on, so I enjoy a lot of reading. If anyone wants to know how precise you can maneuver a 32,000 ton rig with (6) 5,000 hp electric thrusters, I'm your guy.

We have a very nice feature that I use quite a lot. Its called "Ignore Thread" under thread tools. Without it I wouldn't still be here. Many of the guys who were once regulars are now, unfortunately, only occasional drop ins. Some haven't shown up for years. Our loss in most cases.

I mostly now come for the social stuff that is related to boating (maybe related to boating).

As you say most technical questions have been asked in te past and can be found with a searc (hardly anyone searches I think). But lots of times someones question may be just a little different and is worth a topic restart.

That doesn't mean one can not come just for fun.

Speaking as one of those "hey I just bought a boat what do I do now" guys, I am most gratified by the responses here. While I realize my questions maybe basic to you more experienced sailors they are still critically important to me. How else are we to learn other than ask. I suppose if I spent more time sifting through old threads perhaps I might find the answers I seek. However, I would then not be able to become part of the community. As I have been reading and now posting I was impressed at how helpful and kind you all seem to be.

Steve,

That is the beauty of electric motors, all available torque at 1 rpm. You know your normal routine in close quarters of clunking in and out of gear because your diesel won't idle below 600 rpm, and at that rpm doesn't have much torque. The catamaran sailors would love electric-diesel hybrid propulsion, when docking with all the bar flies watching, drinks in hand, as they inch right in perfectly.

This is just one of the reasons I would like hybrid propulsion for my next pleasure boat.

In a 1.5 kt current and high winds, I've consumed as much as 1,000 gallons of diesel per hour just to hold position.
