Most importantly the roach eggs will not be affected in such a short period of time. It seems tried and true boric acid is recommended here.

Also, roaches have been knocked back quite a bit in NYC by the insect baits like Combat. I thought Combat relied on Insect Growth Regulator hormones (IGR), but I may be wrong there. IGRs are good because they are not true poisons. Instead, they disrupt the insect's maturation.
Well excuse me for breathing your Majesty. I grovel in your intellectual splendor and pray that you don't squash me like the unworthy bug you seem to think we are.

For what its' worth, (obviously nothing if we go by you) I have done it once before, and the quantity was as noted. The boat was a 26foot sloop and it worked quite well thank you very much.

I offered it as an option to those who don't want to put toxins in their boat. Take it for what its worth.

Well Sabre

I like the idea just cause it is left of centre and I always thought dry ice is very cool must be primary school science...

Not sure easy to track down where I am but I will try it in the future.

As the OP the title was "what do you do" so if you lie on the floor naked covered in borax and roach motels power to you it is a legitimate response to my question..bit kinky but legitimate.

After the tiller response in "Sex afloat..give it too me" nothing suprizes or offends just makes for a good read and sometimes some great advice..ROLF

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ????

If a beautiful healthy ahi tuna landed on your deck, would you be throwing him out?

One has to look at this with a different perspective...

Do what they do in Asia.... Make them into a meal.....

I personally have not done this, yet.. but... why waste good food.... ?

or breed them and sell them... and make income... to be able to cruise for less then $500/month... (sorry wrong thread....)

1) One more +1 for boric acid (or "Roach Pruff").

2) Boric acid is VERY innocuous. I'm a molecular biologist. For those in the US, remember the "20 mule team Borax" commercials? Same stuff

3) We have NEVER had a roach on the boat - in 4 years. They are all over the pier. Just put it everywhere you can.

They are related compounds, both not so toxic (Borax is used as a food preservative in some countries), but certainly not the same compound, any more than sodium acetate is the same as vinegar.

Boric Acid
CAS 10043-35-3, MP 170.9 deg C, 61.83 gm/mol

Borax
CAS 1303-96-4, MP 743 deg C, MW 381.37 gm/mol

The reason I mention this, is the solubility (and crystalline structure) of Borax may matter, especially in a humid environment. One mechanism behind Borax's toxicity to roaches is physical insofar as it scrapes away the protective waxy coating on their exoskeleton when they scurry over it. This allows the Borate ion to diffuse into their bodies.

Oh, give me a break, Allan. Yes, you are ESSENTIALLY correct - but my reference was for toxicity purposes. Boric acid is an acid of Borax (made by combining with HCl or another acid), and Borax is a salt of Boric acid - the other end of the reaction. Your argument is like saying salt water isn't salt plus water - or sodium acetate plus water isn't essentially vinegar. We aren't putting this on our FOOD. Quoting melting points and molecular weights does not show you are smart - anyone can google. It shows just the opposite. Quit picking nits - unless you post them with a smiley.

What it comes down to is this: Boric acid - as a roach preventative used in storage areas - is pretty much harmless.

P.S. Nice edit, Allan.

Sorry, but that's how it was taken. Seems like you seem to have made a habit of rubbing folks the wrong way.

If I erroneously took it the wrong way, my apologies. I've been around here a while - and I don't often get ticked off. You managed to do this. I would suggest that you look over your responses before hitting the "submit" button. This board is known for being friendly and non-combative.

Re: Cockroaches - What Do You Do ????

If you don't let any daddy roaches on your boat, the mommy roaches can't get bunged up, and lay eggs--although mommy roaches can fly. Hmmm!!
Or-- you can bring ANTS aboard. .

There!!

Oh geez, I started to watch the youtube of someone eating a (shudder) cockroach and couldn't do it. Shut it down. I know this is a friendly board, but posting that youtube was a most unfriendly thing to do - ewwwww, shudder.
