CO2 cartridges in Ensenada?

Can someone tell me where to buy CO2 cartridges in Ensenada or Tijuana? I am flying in on a Mexican airline with my PFD. The Mexican airlines do not allow CO2 cartridges on the flight but I will need one!

Sea Dreaming, this one is a hard one. If you know someone who is driving to Ensenada or La Paz, maybe they could bring them for you. Contact Downwind Marine in San Diego, and see if they still have someone going to La Paz with deliveries for yachties. It seems likely you could buy some there in a sporting goods store.

Re: CO2 cartridges in Ensenada?

We are flying to Panama next week. I checked with the airline (Copa Air) and we can check a USCG approved life-saving PFD w/CO2 cartridge as long as the CO2 cartridge is less than 480gm. The typical CO2 cartridge in my PFD is 180gm. I've flown several different airlines over the years and never have had a problem checking PFDs. As I recall, I once printed a page showing PFDs as OK in checked bags and had this available for gate agent.

Which airline are you flying that prohibits CO2 cartridges in a (key words here), USCG approved life saving device, aka, PFD.

The other thing to keep in mind, the CO2 cartridges are not standard. The size/weight and thread size are all different, depending on the make and model of your PFDs. I had to order specific spare CO2 cartridges online to fit the different make PFDs on board because I couldn't find the right size in our local West Marine (Los Angeles). Even if you find CO2 supplier in Ensenada, they probably won't have the right size/shape for your PFDs.

Good luck,
Don

Re: CO2 cartridges in Ensenada?

Capt. Don has a valid point about the cartridges possibly not matching. Still, Ensenada is so close to the US, I would think a dive shop there would stock a selection....and maybe the right ones. Otherwise have some guests who come by road to visit you bring them.

It's crazy how many variations there are of the CO2 cartridges!

One other thought -- A liferaft inspection / certification company will probably have a supply of proper CO2 cartridges. As I recall, I picked up a set from Avalon Rafts in Wilmington (Los Angeles).

I do recall there is a liferaft place in Ensenada. Check with the people at Cruise Port or Corral Marina

Re: CO2 cartridges in Ensenada?

If you are going thru security in the US the TSA knows they are legal according to the regs. I carry a page out of their manual that says so. They do say that each airline can have there own requirement. American didn't allow them a few years back. Some airlines required them in checked baggage only. If going thru security in the US I don't see how the airline would know.
