Its has been posted and someone speculated its a Wharram.. methinks its maybe a modified homebuild or something based on Wharrams ideas.
Stern is wrong for a Tiki and bow is wrong for the other style.
To much decking and failure to reef in time can do that.

Admittedly, I know little about catamarans, but if the water came in through an open hatch, I don't see why having one hull full of water would flip the whole boat over. I don't understand why it went over so fast (he said less than one minute), and then floated so high. I would have thought he could safely bail it, but that's not how he said it happened. Can anyone explain this for me? Thanks in advance.

With Wharrams its best to have the fore hatches clamped down.. on my Tiki 21/26 I fitted the rubber bonnet catches one used on minis (original) to hold them down tight, also used draught extruder to make it watertight.
The main hatch design is crap so I did the same with the forward half of the folding hatch.
My Tiki 26 (plastic commercial build) on a sail back from France in a F7 had waves sweeping the hulls (full sail doing upto 16kts).. closing the UK coast I noticed a strange surging movement to the boat and thought some of the beam lashings had come loose but when I checked they were all fine.
As it had quietened down I opened the hatch to make a coffee and saw the hull half full.. same when I checked the other side.. the surging sensation was the water riding back and forwards as I rode the waves.
If he had flooded one hull that would have helped flip the boat if he had full sail up.. wind getting under all that decking would have finished the job.
Wharrams are very stable, light and hard to capsize but with the right combination can be flipped.
If it was just the forward hatch that caused it its unlikely a Wharram.. theres a watertight bulkhead.

Cats get their righting moments from bouyancy .
Flood the leeward hull and the righting moment is greatly refuced.

My Wharram tiki 31 had four compartments in each hull by memory, you couldn't fill the entire hull.

I had the port center compartment full once, didn't flow to the rest.

Ahaha.. The Hinemoa is the old heavy design from the 70's and a narrower beam than the later stitch n glue Tikis if memory serves.

Thanks for that link. There were some surprisingly high quality builds being documented on that site. I lost a couple hours perving.

Yep, people sometimes have a one sided view of Wharrams, but there are also some very nice high quality ones around too, as well as some still not terrible but more simple versions that are getting people out cruising.

Sometimes it's not what you have but how you use it
