Capsize vs Sinking Fear
*** Preface: this is NOT a multi vs mono thread, please don't turn it into one, but a pyschological inquiry. ***
The recent capsize of an Atlantic 57 and the sinking of a monohull in the ARC got me to thinking about the fear levels of individuals relative to sinking vs capsize.
For example, I had friends shopping for boats, their fear of capsize on a cat drove them to buy a monohull. They then bought a life raft for it...with no hydrostatic release ...clearly their fear of capsized greatly outweighed their fear of sinking.
As for me, Im equally averse to either event...so I balance it out by sailing both multis and monos.
What about you?

Re: Capsize vs Sinking Fear
I think the result is the same, swimming in the sea , or in a liferaft, a inverted multi act like a big liferaft , multis need a liferaft anyway as well monos, personally I don't fear sinking as well I don't fear capsize, me think last capsize episodes are operator error....

Seen some mono's in an imminent danger of sinking at anytime. Corroded seacocks, old hoses, rusty clamps, unsecured locker hatches, electrical wiring from hell etc etc.. But fear not, can allways use common sense and bail out ASAP.

Capsize vs Sinking Fear is how dirt dwellers talk.
Much easier to stay on land and not worry about either issue.

Most dirt dwellers I know would not undestand the question.

Re: Capsize vs Sinking Fear
I suspect - there not being any research on the topic of which I am aware - that your fear depends on your fantasy of disaster. That may be a circular statement - maybe your fear drives your fantasy, or maybe they are one and the same. Mine is of sinking, not capsize or fire, so there's a hydrostatic release liferaft up top. Some people actually purchase liferafts in suitcases, stored below, which really makes me nervous. I used to know a person who would not wear a seatbelt in a car because she was afraid of an immersion accident - never mind that they are very rare relative to collisions, and that she would be better off in an immersion if she was wearing a seatbelt. To each his own nightmare and response.

Re: Capsize vs Sinking Fear
I think I am a sinking fear person over capsize, but I still prefer mono's.
With that being said I like cats and would buy one if it was a perfect deal, but I just prefer mono's in general.

Re: Capsize vs Sinking Fear
This must be very personal. Sort of like do you prefer to die by cancer of by a stroke? And then she choked on a piece of fat pork.
I am a predominantly mono beast and so I would rather be in a capsized catamaran than in a sinking mono. Pretty self explanatory.
People who have too much fear should avoid outdoor sports and generally try to stay in a brick and mortar, well insured buildings.
Cheers,
b.

Re: Capsize vs Sinking Fear
It's a normal thought and concern. What you do is take all the measures to make your vessel safe and secure. That is what a prudent skipper does. You should fixes, equipment and strategies to deal with blown thru hulls and breached hulls.

...depends a lot on who you're in bed with. Especially risky if her husband is Italian.

Actually, that confuses me. You're a mono guy, but would rather be in a capsized cat? Because it floats?
