Can You Decipher what the boat is by VIN number?

Hi all, I found a boat that looks to be 26 to 27 FT, but the people running the facility seem to have lost all the paper work and information about it.
I found what appears to be a VIN number on it by the swim ladder.
The VIN is, SSU2703M76A.
If there is any way to decipher this I would appreciate it.
-Thanks.

The HIN ( hull identification number) is a 12 character sequence beginning with the manufacturer 3 letter code. Be sure you have all 12 characters. After the manufacturer code is a 5 digit serial number and the the model number then date of certification of thr hull. Look for more info here http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm.

This is "system 2" format, used from mid 70s to mid 80s.

Manufacturer S2, LOA: 27ft, hull#3, made in 1976 in January. Letter M is a spacer.

Since the boat is a 1976, you might want to check locations on the hull for a USCG Documentation Number. The first place to start would be in the starboard aft locker, then around chainplates ( It is a Sailboat ??), and then under the salon flooring. You might be able to get a history of the vessel. Thanks Rick. I'm not sure I'm going to do anything yet. I asked them if I could look inside and the lady said I could if I left my drivers license with them.
I flat told them I won't leave it with them (while thinking to myself they just lost all the boats paperwork.)
That, and I couldn't drive it out of the parking lot anyway. I did invite her to come with me while I looked, but that was a no go too. The other lady said they have had it a long time, and I can see why.
Anyway, I managed to get a shot of it with my cell phone for you guys.

Re: Can You Decipher what the boat is by VIN number?

Wow, centercockpit on a 26 footer! Funky.

BTW sailboatdata site does not show a 27ft model from this manufacturer in 1976, only up to 26. Than in 1977 they went with a 30ft and 36ft and in 1980 28ft. May be they initially called your model 27ft for marketing purposes as many builders do that to help the dealers sell.

Supposedly the company is still in business (as of 2013) somewhere in Michigan.

What do you mean "correct"? Did you take it off the transom yourself or are you relying on some document saying that's the hull number for this particular boat?

Nope, I copied it right off the boat, and I was worried that I may have missed a character? When you mentioned that it was a system 2 format from mid 70's to mid 80's, it sounded like I got it right.

Re: Can You Decipher what the boat is by VIN number?

The letter M in the HIN indicates that it follows the Model year format.
Also, I would be weary of a seller who does not allow supervised access to the boat interior, including lockers. Unmotivated or clueless seller!

When I look at the boat that's for sale I either rub the HIN on a piece of paper with a pencil (actually required in MA to register a boat) or take a cellphone foto. That way I'm sure of getting the number right. ))

I was going to take a photo of it, and I actually looked at it through the screen thinking about that shot, but my phone wasn't picking out the characters well enough to trust. In the end I carefully wrote down what I saw instead.
I suppose I could always go back to double check them, but was put off by the manager when she wouldn't allow my boarding the boat to check it out.
