Cable Damping Springs

I had a cable jump the qtr wheel and was wondering on the merits of having damping springs on the cable eye bolts at all?

In picture 1 is that a broken part I see?

I see that too but I'm thinking more like possibly two home-made brackets?

Only time you should drop a wire is when there is too much play..
I got a cable helm that uses about 8m of wire and never had a problem. I have 5 pulleys on each wire !. Springs might be good to absorb shocks but I think when they bounce back it could be worse !

I wouldn't want the springs there unless they were so well compressed they ceased being springs.

It's also the first time I've seen springs used for that application.

I have seen springs on big old aircraft.
Reason is steel and aluminum have different rates of thermal expansion and you have to have something to maintain tension.
However surely this isn't an issue on a boat?

There are brackets showing which were installed to beef up the system. Nothing is broken, the Stbd side cable is pictured, port is disconnected and not showing in the pics. I feel the same as what I am hearing in that the benefit of dampening offers increased slack under severe load. I have never seen springs in this application before and am leaning toward removing them.
