Bomar hatch needs repairs

Anyone know of a company that does Bomar hatch repairs?

I have a 1980 Bomar hatch that leaks and some fixtures are snapped off. New hatch or is there a repair alternative?

Re: Bomar hatch needs repairs

Which Bomar hatch? I have rebuilt several 1978's over the past 25 years, some of them it would have been better to replace with stainless steel. Not sure what part snapped off but if its the typical aluminium Bomar hatch it may be difficult to find someone to weld a repair.
On the large opening deck hatches the hinge is a stainless steel bolt threaded into the aluminum frame and the threads wear away. Thats an easy fix with a Helicoil and better than the original.

Are they cast aluminum hatches? If the aluminum frame is broken, might have to get a new one. If not, you can restore a hatch for about half what a new one cost. We removed ours, had some machine shop work done on them, had them sand blasted and powder coated, replaced all the dogs and risers, replaced the lens, put in new gaskets, and reinstalled them. This cost about $450 per hatch. By far the most expensive part was the new dogs and risers.

We did the removal, lens replacement, and reinstall ourselves. It would be more if you paid someone to do this.

Gasket material:

If you don't want to pay $4.50/ft for something that shouldn't cost that much, try these..

from McMasterCarr
8605K44 Weather Resistant EPDM Foam, Cord, 1/2" Diameter, 100' Length
8694K67 Weather Resistant Neoprene/EPDM/SBR Foam, AdhesiveBack, 1/8" Thick, 3/4" Wide, 50' Long

They are both squishy like the $4.50 /ft material.
Glue ends together with super glue.

It's not a good deal if you have just a small hatch or port o seal, but if you have several, it's way cheaper.

For my Bomar hatches, I needed 9/16" dia gasket, but was too cheap to pop for the Bomar/West 10' pack. I also needed enough for 2 hatches and several opening ports.

1/2" is not big enough, so I added the 1/8" flat first, then the round cord. It is important to get round cross-section; otherwise you won't be able to make the bends on the corners without deforming.

I don't remember the adhesive but it was black, maybe 3M, maybe 8003, 8006 or similar part number. Picket it up at the one of the chain auto stores.

More info on what parts of your hatches are in need of repair would be helpful, as would info & pics of the style/model of hatch(es) in question.

Definitely call Pompanette. They are very helpful. However, the last time I needed something a couple of years back, they would not sell to me directly, only to a retailer or yard. Not a big deal, just an extra step.

Re: Bomar hatch needs repairs

Bowmar had little info when I contacted them about an old hatch. In fact, they could not even find a drawing when I gave them the serial number and dimensions. If yours is cast aluminum like mine, about the only breakable parts are the 2 closer support riges on the frame, the 2 seats for the piston to open/close on the frame and the 2 piston anchors on the lid. On mine both closers are needed to seal the hatch. If that is your problem you might be able to bolt an angle onto the frame for the closers to pull against. Otherwise you have to pull the hatch and get a repair from a local welder. Some pics and dimensions might help. Good luck and fair winds.

For 9/16" neoprene foam cord, I used Canal Rubber on Canal St in NYC.

Re: Bomar hatch needs repairs

I rebuilt our old aluminum Bomar hatches with a piece of scrap acrylic from the local salvage, cut on a CNC router table. New knobs from Pompanette and some white paint made them good as new, at a fraction of the price of new offshore hatches.
