Re: Boat Naming Tips?

There are three of us, so naming was especially diplomatically heavy We went through dozens and dozens with two of us loving it and the other hating it.... We couldn't pick one home-place, one memory, one meaningful name, without excluding the others, so those were out straight away. We also have 3 cats onboard, so the risk was being cutesy and those were out. The original name of the boat was french, and I hated the thought of making a gutteral sound three times x who knows how many times a day....

Our runner up was Triptych, which would have been cool (in art, three individual pieces that make up a whole), but spelling phonetically I didn't like. So we hit on Wake. The track we make through the water. The state of coming into consciousness from sleep or from ignorance. The party after the funeral. All perfect for us And short, sweet, easy to say, easy to spell to boot...

I did leave the original name cut into the davit arch out of respect though...

Yes. He has lived aboard his entire life except for one year.

Looks like 467 registered with the Coast Guard.

Re: Boat Naming Tips?

Will the boat ever visit any non English speaking countries? If so, avoid clever sounding stuff like, "Y Knot" or "Fishing Hatt" stuff like that.

Worst name ever on a ship... probably suggested to a Taiwanese or Japanese or whatever owner by a British prankster using the Brit pronounciation of the planet.

"Titan Uranus".

The crew probably got into a lot of fights wherever they went.

The moral is, don't ask someone who speaks a different language from you, for a beautiful sounding name in a language that you don't speak. That exotic sounding Hawaiian or Fijian or whatever name might be a very very funny joke to someone who understands it.

Something like "WAR BIRD" etc.?

Most of us consider such names warnings. You are neither at war nor are you a bird.

Greetings from ROXY. Named after mom in law, funder of the vessel, God rest her.

SHORT = one word
Easy to say and hear on the VHS
NO cute mis-spellings
No silly meanings
No words of obscure or forgotten languages
Short also costs lesson your transom and/or permits larger letters
Make sure it is not offensive in most languages.

As I explained a few posts ago, the preferred name would be "WAR BEAR" as it's a nickname of my dog, Warren, who will also be on the boat.

I would hardly think there are many boat names where the names are actually literal descriptions of what someone is or supposed to be.

I guess I missed the poll on that one.

Why? Do the letter people charge you for the space? Seems like short=few syllables to me. "Roxy" and "War Bear" are both 2 syllables. That is about as short as you can get.

I certainly think all of those are great ideas.

Re: Boat Naming Tips?

If you're going to be traveling internationally, make the name something someone who barely speaks English can understand over the radio. Our previous boat was named "Tricia jean". We loved both the uniqueness of it and the fact that it was a concatenation of our mother's first names. However, it was difficult to get native English speakers to understand it over the radio and next to impossible to get foreign port captains and others to understand it.

Don't try to be too clever, cute, or silly. Don't get too far from "Bob" or "Elsa May." Respect the boat.

So, War Bear it is! I like it, and as mentioned earlier, it ticks off all of your boxes.
