America's Cup....Really?

Sail-World.com : America's Cup: Coutts eliminates San Francisco as 2017 venue

Wonder what the "rub" is that SF's mayor is taking such a strong position?

Re: America's Cup....Really?

Understand the decision is made by Ellison's group and is a financial decision in every respect. They want to go to the highest bidder. The Olympics want to as well. Only one about to be forced to change is the NCAA and their money making machine. I'm a sports enthusiast but tired of some of the public spending being required by wealthy owners for stadiums and other amenities. I know San Francisco's leaders will be blamed for this, but lets make sure we don't lose sight of the fact that Oracle Team USA is not interested in the best site, but the most profitable one for themselves. Larry Ellison is worth $50 billion yet somehow we're supposed to blame San Francisco because they won't fund the America's Cup.

Re: America's Cup....Really?

Read the book Billionaire and Mechanic to understand how San Francisco altered their agreements with the Oracle Americas Cup organization AFTER they had struck a deal. San Francisco did not follow thru on many commitments and failed to make decisions in a timely fashion.

Additionally, San Francisco claims to have seen a negative return on all the money they invested in Americas Cup. The city claims that America Cup fans do not spend the money in the City by the Bay that they should have in order to allow the Cup event to be a profitable experience for the city.

I have no way to know if any of the claims made by either side are true but I know that here in San Diego the city is going nuts while trying to convince Oracle Racing to hold the event in San Diego Bay.

It will be true stadium America's Cup Racing if it comes to San Diego.

Again, I do not know if that is a good thing but it is a sure thing if Ellison has his way.

And then after dealing with Ellison on an America's Cup, San Diego wwill have the same decision on whether to do it again.

As I understand it, neither San Francisco or Ellison showed any real desire to negotiate further to try to reach a compromise. San Francisco rejected the funding amounts desired outright and Ellison's group rejected many things such as paying for the use of the docks and agreeing to pay union wages for the labor used by them. It seemed clear to me that both had already had more of dealing with the other than they could take and were ready for a divorce.

Personally I'd enjoy having the Cup right down the road but open water in Bermuda might be more "interesting".

Chicago seems the most poorly fit for it to me but probably the one willing to spend the most money.

Oh, and when they say it's not about the money, it always is.

Whatever is the AC question, the answer is always "money".

Seattle would be wonderful. Between Alkai point and downtown.
