America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75 (new)
I’ve looked for posts on this and found none so I’ll start.
Team New Zealand launched their first iteration of their AC75 yesterday.
The boat looks great and has been talked up large by all and sundry. Top speed is reported to be “between 40 and 50kn” with most discussion leaning towards 50. Someone said there was more emphasis placed on aerodynamics than hydrodynamics and the extra deep cockpits had the function of reducing air pressure/resistance when sailing up at those speeds.
Impressive to look at, can’t wait to see how it performs.

Yes, shame the weather didn't suit them but I'm sure they'll be out sailing in the next couple of days. I think they'll be disappointed if it doesn't hit 50kts from what they've said. The question is whether they can keep silly speeds through manoeuvres. If they can they might be keeping that quiet.

Maybe the mods can merge the threads?

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75
They were out today being towed to test foiling, and raising sails, so very close. Meanwhile American Magic has actually got out of the water under sail, so they're very evenly matched for time...

So long tacking duels (I know, long gone), this is not your daddy's KZ1.

That's what people said about the foiling catamarans too, that there wouldn't be anymore match racing or prestart maneuvers.
Well, that soon changed, and I fully expect it will quickly change with the AC75s too.

At that speed, and if they don't massively string out the course, I don't think there'd be more than a few tacks before they hit the layline. Yes, yes AWA well forward and all that.
It's going to be more of a drag race than say race 7 of AC25 finals (was it that long ago?)
Don't get me wrong, I grew up on HC16s and love the speed, but I stopped watching AC after 2010 as it's going the way of iceyachts.

Looks like it's going to take a bit of figuring out? Has a rig been built or are they using these tow tests to determine what power is needed in the rig?

Read the links above. They raised the sails today but didn't actually go foiling. Any day now. Too late to start working things out, that's what they've been doing all this time.

Re: America’s Cup - ETNZ launches 1st AC75
Something puzzles me.
With a 37 metre rig above a super-lightweight boat, what is it that stops these boats from falling over when they’re standing still? Is the rig that light or are the foils that heavy? And what keeps it upright at the point when the sail takes it’s first pressure and there is no boatspeed?
Looking at the pics above, it must be the chase boat alongside providing support?

Has to be yes to both your questions, but I’d assume the foils and strut are quite heavy.
There has to be ballast, hull stability can only go so far.
