Re: Yachtworld Asking Prices VS Actual Sale Price - or What is the Markup ?

btw--most keels were iron or cement not lead--for many decades, now. ones with lead keels would and should be classics.

Adjust offer to zero for cement or iron keels.

Re: Yachtworld Asking Prices VS Actual Sale Price - or What is the Markup ?

My Ariel is 47yrs old and I paid the full asking price(no broker). Worth every penny and then some. The are alot of good boats out for sale, less good old boats, even less good old small boats, and even less good old small boats at a great price. I feel very fortunate in finding my boat.

In that case I'll raise Factor's offer to $611 since lead is at about $.94/lb. I'll even pick it up if it's in Easton.

The Island Packet 380 was built between 1998 and 2004 so its not close to 20 years old. At 9000 lbs lead times $23/lb=$207000. Must have been a newer one. Yes, you did real good.

1999 NADA: Suggested List: $209950
Low Retail: $100550
High Retail: $113950

2004 NADA: Suggested List: $268950

High Retail: $141100

A fair deal is when neither buyer nor seller are happy.

Re: Yachtworld Asking Prices VS Actual Sale Price - or What is the Markup ?

So...just saw a boat I had been looking at a bit had a big price change...

When it was first listed for sale privately, it was listed at near $90k about 2.5 years ago. Price dropped a bit over time. Listed a couple months ago with a broker, asking price is still listed on yachtworld at $39.5k. Just came on craigslist by the same broker at $14.5k.

YW: 1974 41' Brandlmayr Pilothouse Steel Ketch Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

craigslist:
41' Brandlmayr Pilothouse Steel Ketch

So frustrating. I have seen this a few times now, where the asking price is halved or more within a couple months. I am wondering whether half of asking price is actually too much.

In some cases it might be. There simply is no "standard" amount that you should offer based on the asking price.

My attitude, however, is that if I look at a boat where the owner is asking twice what I think it is worth, probably that owner is out of touch with the market and I will just walk away. What will probably happen, if I offer him what I think it is worth, is that he will get mad at me for trying to "lowball" him.

On the other hand, I might just make a comment like "I would consider buying the boat, but I have to say that I think your asking price is pretty far off of what it is worth." Then see what his response is. If he gets defensive, and starts trying to convince me that his price is right, it's not worth the hassle, and I'll just say thanks, but no thanks. If he says something like, "Well, let's hear your offer" then maybe we can deal.

Re: Yachtworld Asking Prices VS Actual Sale Price - or What is the Markup ?

There were many times in my life that I sold stuff for way less than I was asking purely based on the moment. If that person had offered me that amount the day before or the day after, I would have told them to get lost. I found that at least for me, life is all about timing.
Back to the OP: I think it would be fair to think one would accept 10% less. This has nothing to do with the Brokers commission, it has more to do with how hard will someone bargain me down and how little will I accept. If one really wants to sell a boat, the asking price will have to at least be reasonable, which may throw the above info out the window.
If you are motivated and start btoo low, you may be scaring away serious buyers thinking something is wrong somewhere.
Botom line - it's all a crapshoot.
