Yacht Share Syndicates

Hi all

Having owned a small yacht a few years ago and looking to fill that hole that has been in my life since I sold it, I have been looking at yacht share syndicates. Has anyone had any experience with managed yacht share? Has it been good or bad? It looks great on paper, but the sceptic in me wants hear it from someone who has been there instead of the people who are selling it.

I've got the same question. Surely someone in this mass of assembled knowledge has tried sharing a yacht?

i was in share with 3 others. sold out after 3 years. Selfmanaged duties, worked well.

Excellent way to get feel for boat ownership at reduced cost if ownership is on your radar.

we sold shares in our 44 ft cat after we sailed from the Caribbean to Australia, retained 2 of the 8 for a few years then sold out completely. Self managed with a yearly meeting of all owners who wanted to come where we agreed on an annual budget. 11 years latter the boat is still in shared ownership, around half the original owners still have their shares. Daydream still lives at Hamilton Island and is very well cared for and still no arguments between owners. In fact it worked so well we would like to find 1 partner for our current boat, much harder to find the right person for this one though as she is large and we want her to continue her slow trip around the world rather than being based in one place.

Really, I'm looking for the same thing. This year I have a friend who is using Palarran for two months with a captain. There is a good chance this will lead to a multi-year commitment so I may sell him one of the one hundred shares of the company that owns Palarran in order get the arrangement more formal. It's just unlikely that my family is going to use the boat for more than two months per year which makes it kind of a waste for the boat. Income would be nice also, but not 100% of the reason. Having someone take a boat one way, and you back, would be very helpful. Like going from Corfu to Venice, then back.

Thanks folks. All sounds pretty positive so far. And that's right. A cheaper, soft entrance to family sailing with a view to maybe going livaboard later. I'm hoping we find the right people to share with. Only one way to find out, I guess.
