Where to shop for liability insurance? Canadian boat going to Mexico.

I plan to take my boat south (from Vancouver to Cabo San Lucas), and am shopping for a liability insurance.

The one quote I have so far is $800 in Canadian dollars (~$630 in USD). Seems expensive - it's more than I paid for P&I + hull coverage, restricted to PNW.

Should I take this deal, or keep shopping around? Who should I talk to? Keeping in mind that US insurance companies mostly don't deal with Canadians.

Try Offshore Risk Management. Last time I used them it was $500 USD for third party insurance for a US boat. Also, Topsail and Pantaneus have been recommended to me but I have yet to check them out.

You wont be in the US that long. I think Progressive is a few hundred bucks (a year) for liability only. You need that to berth in a harbor (harbour). Request to make monthly payments. Then cancel as you leave the US. Mx. Insurance is mandatory and also a few hundred bucks (a year). Hope this helps.

I'm heading south to Mexico this year as well...my broker is changing my insurance to Lloyds of London and assures me that as an international insurer I am covered in Mexico, as well as far as Equador ...no need for separate Mexican liability.

I hope he's correct.

Ya...Me too...Especially since you will be dealing with Mexican owned marinas.

The $800 quote I've got is from Lloyds as well.

I think the idea with splitting up US and Mexican insurance is to have a narrower range, hence cheaper cover in both places.

I asked my broker about this...he said he would give me a form letter written in Spanish from Lloyds confirming coverage.

I needed it for mooring on buoys, and anchoring in some harbors, in Hawaii. Just called my house insurer, Allstate, and got a personal umbrella liability policy, that provides that coverage, for about $300 per year.

We are in Mexico right now (Isla Mujeres). We presently have a Lloyds policy which I got through Bluewater insurance (Florida). We are US flagged. If you need a contact, PM me and I will send to you.

Re: Where to shop for liability insurance? Canadian boat going to Mexico.

i use mariners group. my liability is 285 yearly.
you MUST use a company with feet in mexico--or it will not be accepted in mexico. no boat screw us, no progressive, no yada yada..must have feet in mexico.
mariners group is advertised here. there are others yes but i found these folks are good.

if you check into ensenada, they used to allow you time to buy from a lil company in town then return to finish check in procedure.
