Re: Where to Get Third Party (Liability) Insurance ?

Here's a thought... or at least the kernel of one...

MarkJ mentioned Moorings and Sunsail as examples of as and when insurance.

CF represents a lot of boats with a huge combined buying power.

What are the chances of getting an underwriter to structure a policy for members here, similar to a charter company policy, where there is a continuous annual premium being paid by a CF group, and members could avail themselves of cover for a time period/size of boat formula. Any actuary worth his salt and with a bit of imagination could come up with something workable.

Those seeking to be part of it may need to form a sub group, and it may be necessary to throw in a bit of beer money monthly to make it workable, but if the overall annual amount is low it could be worth it...

OK, ball's in play.... somebody else give it a kick

Nautilus?

I had a chat with Nautilus yesterday so the details are already starting to fade but from what I remember...

They do liability or you can get close to liability by having a small sum insured.

I'm seem to remember they said something about insuring in some of the the Pacific Islands for those who have held a policy for more than a year.

I did contact a couple of insurance companies so I could have gotten my wires crossed.

They seemed friendly. Why not give them a call?

Jim, After getting the run around from several company's trying to sell full coverage, we found Holdfast Insurance Brokers here in OZ to get us $10m liability ins. for around $500/ year. They're in Darwin: ph. #(08)8941 8000, email- info.nt@holdfast.com.au. We're rarely in marinas but had to get it in Mackay. Hope that helps.

Is that cover for Aus waters only, or will it give world wide coverage too?

Paul, The coverage is for Aus. waters and out 200 nms. Unfortunately we'll be heading out of Oz for Indo - Thailand for Xmas. Townsville, Aus. was the 1st marina that we had to prove we had coverage to get in in our 5 yrs of cruising.

In other words, I only go to a marina for a day here or there so why pay for 365 days of insurance. I would be vastly better off paying a higher premium for just a day or two's cover.

Mark
G'Day Mark,

FWIW, we were able to buy two weeks of coverage in New Cal a couple of years ago. Wanted to put the boat in a marina because there was a cyclone on its way and we had some grandchildren aboard... marina required insurance.

Wasn't terribly expensive, but was quite a hassle to organize quickly. I would like not to have to do that again!

And for all the other kind folks who have made suggestions: I've contacted the UK firms and their coverage does not extend beyond UK waters and is only for UK flagged vessels/YRA members and other such restrictions. Waiting for replies from other firms.

I will keep you posted as to results.

Thanks to all who made suggestions.

Jim

Also they require you to clear in and out of each port and have your cruisnig log stamped and then handed in when you leave Greece.

As far as I am aware no does, of course.

Re: Where to Get Third Party (Liability) Insurance ?

I'm planning a cruise to Europe and thinking about insurance. I've never had it before, and was never bothered about it by anyone during my circumnavigation from 1995 to 2003 until I got to Toronto, where they were totally anal about it. Prabably didn't run into that because I mostly anchored. Now it seems insurance has become a requirement pretty well everywhere.
This looks like a good solution: https://www.pantaenius.com/en/austri...liability.html
looks like you can do it online with none of the bullroar like a survey. Cost is reasonable and they advertise global coverage, premiums would likely be lower in some places than in Europe.
