Where in the World Are Used Yachts Least Expensive ?

A hypothetical question for the worldly sailor: if identical boats were sold in the Mediterranean, the east and west coasts of the US, Australia and Thailand, how would you order the locations, from cheapest to the most expensive?

Let's imagine that the yacht in question is a 10 year old 40’ cruiser of a well known brand..

What currency conversions need to be done and where will eventual home port be so as to allow for taxes/delivery?

The two cheapest for initial purchase would be Florida and Southern California in the U. S. depending on the time of year. Just before severe weather starts on the east coast of the U. S. prices drop considerably.

Other costs need to be considered as Cat has stated.

I would think the lowest prices are where there are a lot of boats verse few buyers. IE in the Carribean

Well I've looked all over for an Oyster 435 Ketch and the best value happens to be in the Mediterranean at this moment in time. That's only because the owner is very keen to sell and they are quite rare anyway in good condition and at a good price.

found a westsail 32 for sale in fla for 7k, didnt buy it, found a formosa 41 for 10 k in kali--bought her-- found a formosa needing work in kali-- 4900 takes her-- still for sale in a boatyard-- didnt find any GOOD deal in brokerages--but i didnt want a newer boat, either... the good deals are out there-- you have to be willing to do work on it before sailing off into sunset or sunrise.... goood luck-happy hunting.

i used brokerages such as yachtworld to see what the "going" asking prices were--i found some boats thru them that needed more work for many more dollars than i found with this formosa--walk docks and go to marinas --if you want a true deal and dont mind working to fix her your way--- everywhere there are boats there willbe deals-- but the work is yet to be done for making them go...
i found formosas in worse shape than mine were 30-42kusd--ouch. i got a good deal. keep looking and the right boat will find you.

Suspect few have actual experience buying in all those locations, and personally can't advise on Thailand or USA in your table.

But IMHO Med currently would be better value than Australia even before the stronger A$ and weakened Euro.

Maybe others can place the USA / Thailand?

I found my '87' Oceanis 321 in St Maarten as well... in the Soggy Dollar Bar at Pallapa...
Little French chap tapped me on the shoulder and said he'd heard I was looking... only used a broker once out of the 14 boats owned...

We plan on looking at a few in Florida when we are there over Christmas. Craigslist seems to have quite a few at pretty good prices, and don't forget the U.S. Marshal and Custom websites, every so often they get a good one they want to unload.
