Umbrella insurance including the boat

Our State Farm agent called and said that as of this year, they "exclude" the boat from our umbrella liability insurance policy. (Company-wide change, not just on our policy).

We were with State Farm specifically because they previously included watercraft on their policy as long as the underlying insurance coverage was there. Many that I looked at do not cover watercraft.

Question - does anyone have an umbrella policy that includes your boat?

I'm curious about the responses on this thread as well. I also have a State Farm Umbrella policy. Currently plan to purchase a cat this summer for long term cruising and I had not even thought about my umbrella policy.

You might want to consider a Russian grey cat as they do not shed at all. Nothing worse than cat hair all over the boat. As for the umbrella, they are so inexpensive that I do not bother to insure mine. Just sayin'.

I have a couple of umbrella policies and they include the boat, tender, etc. (this is just liability coverage). Most of my insurance is Farmers, but my agent used different companies for the umbrella policies.

My umbrella policy includes the boat. I have everything insured through Nationwide.

I just talked to my State Farm Agent (9 AM PST Feb 11). She assured me that a State Farm Umbrella Policy will provide excess liability coverage for an damages or injuries caused by our boat or on our boat. But, it will only provide that coverage if we have a boat insurance policy that provides the primary liability for damage/injuries caused by the boat or occur on the boat.

I told her about this discussion thread and she will contact State Farm Underwriting and verify what she told me.

BUT - the really interesting thing is she cannot find a current Umbrella policy for us. They see our auto and home insurance but have lost track of the Umbrella policy I thought we had for the last 20-years.

Tacoma - yes, we definitely have the underlying liability coverage required. That is not the problem. My State Farm agent said that there is a change to their policy starting this year that excludes the boat. So right now, your umbrella policy probably still covers it. At renewal, it may change.

Thanks for the clarification and more importantly, thanks for the original post. We have all our bills paid automatically and do not track their payments. At some time in the last three years State Farm stopped collecting for the Umbrella Policy and then cancelled the policy.

We would not have noticed the cancellation if you had not asked your question.

I do, 26' Seafarer covered under a Merrimack Mutual Fire Insurance umbrella policy. Interesting to note though that the 26' and 10hp yanmar are the max length/hp allowed under the policy. ymmv . ..

My husband and I just purchased a boat and the marina where our slip is requires a million dollar liability policy.
I called my State Farm agent and she said she couldn't quote me a liability only policy without a boat policy too. Their quote was pretty high.
We talked to some of our slip neighbors and they gave us the name of another local State Farm agent that a lot of the slip owners use.
I called him up and got the required million dollar liability policy only for $115/year.

We are undecided whether we will get a policy on the boat itself. We are still waiting for quotes from a few different companies.
