Shipping Costs?

I'm trying to get a rough estimate of how much it would cost to have a sailboat moved. I don't have a boat yet (but looking), just trying to figure out a rough estimate. I've searched these forums with little luck finding anyone who's mentioned what they paid to have one moved around. I'm in Dallas TX and looking to buy up to 500 miles away as far as the Gulf Coast or maybe even FLA if I have to.

Boats I'm looking at:

Catalina, Beneteau, O'day 30-35 footer or similar.

Putting together my budget for how much I would spend and would like to know how much I'm looking at $ wise to transport something like this.

Any help would be appreciated.

You should expect to pay something on the order of:
From 1 to 300 miles: $500 and up minimum charge
or between: $1.75 to $3.50 per mile

I have received two quotes for a 42 footer from Maine to New Orleans. One was 4200.00 the other 7900.00 both with fuel surcharges. (I would say that that is a pretty large spread) I wasn't serious at the time so I didn't look hard at the companies insurance etc. This also had no other expenses such as decommissioning or commissioning etc. I did find that the list of haulers at New and Used Yachts for Sale - YachtWorld.com was a good place to start.

Speaking from experience, please make sure the mover is not, in fact, a broker who intends to sub out the job to another mover. Secondly, you will want to make sure the costs include permits and that there are no other additional cost such as lead and trail vehicle in the event your boat is over something like 12-1/2 or 13-1/2 feet wide (I would need to look it up again).

Last April we moved a Westsail 32 from St Marys GA to Lake Texoma for $4,200. This was a 1100 mile trip so the cost was $3.80 a loaded mile. At that time diesel was running $4 a gallon. Good advice on avoiding a broker. As noted above, permitting and width are big issues.
