Salary for a Teacher / Tutor for 2 kids 10 & 12

Newbie here, in the process of planning our circumnavigation. Lots of my questions have been answered on this forum, and many other partial answers have sent me in the right direction.

I'm trying to judge what the right price is for a salary for a teacher to come along with us. I realize that I might be able to find someone that would come along anyway, but my primary interest if I did this would be to find someone who's actually qualified as a K-8 type teacher. We'll be leaving summer of 2013, so looking for someone for the 2013-14 School year to start with.

Any thoughts on what a good budget number is for this? (I've registered on findacrew but its too soon to start a 75$ a month fee running just to compare to what other people are asking!).

If you are going to have a teacher along to help look out for and instruct children on board, you should probably plan on about $200/month, which is the US going rate for an au pair. You may need to pay more if you expect to get an accredited K-8 teacher.

Re: Salary for a teacher/tutor for 2 kids 10 & 12.

I'm a teacher and retiring NLT May 2013 to go cruising and although not exactly looking for a job or crewing, the right boat and sailing area could change that.

I think you should be able to find someone, but most will have little experience as they will tend to be very young with little landlocked strings attached. Not sure what duties you would be looking for, but I think you could get someone for $500 a month, maybe less. As mentioned young unemployed teachers abound, but with no experience you could probably do just as well yourself.

You may be able to attract a single or couple retiring, an example would be my girlfriend and me, she a history/english/reading specialist and I am a math/science(physics and meteorology) teacher, both 6-12 qualified. Again, we would consider doing something like this for little or no money for the right boat and the right cruising area.

Oh, btw--welcome aboard.

My wife is qualified and has 15 years ocean experience as well. We would look at something like that..let's chat.

Thanks for the replies already! All being well we'll have the boat by November or so, then spend this winter in the Caribbean for a number of weeks on and off the boat, while the kids are still in regular school.

We're still trying to decide on home schooling ourselves (with or without something like the K-12 program) vs having someone help. There's pros and cons both ways of course.
