Published Costs of Cruising

the best costs of cruising are the unpublished ones-- those found in cool places by interaction with natives .... and barter....never know what ye will find to be able to have fixed for damnnear no money.....

My anual income is about $11,000 ($900/mo) and I plan to cruise comfortably with that. 500,000 would last me 45 years with no invest ment. My boat is paid for, after it is ready to go the final price will be almost $25,000. This just proves my theory, budgets vary wildly, depending on the individual and what they plan on getting out of their crusiing. The total cost of what is considered to be "essentials" on land sckews what people think is nessesary to live/crusie on the water.

With my income I cannot afford to keep my "land ties" much longer and the most economically feasible solution (by far) is to crusie.

Actually several members sent me thanks for that rather sardonic post and I apologize if you felt it was offensive.

This highlights a difficultly when you ask questions from such a diverse group as we cruisiers, we've grown weary of defending what we do so we tend to keep our lives rather private.

yes is that-- maine coon mix---all 16 1/2 pounds of him...lol loves dorado very much and he is bubba daboatkat--my buddy and cruising kitty...LOL....kinda big cruising kitty....

A few non-long term cruising expenses I've seen:

A 2.5 month cruise in the Bahamas this past year on my Hunter 30:

Food and drink: about $20-25/person/day including meals out.
Diesel Fuel: about 2 gallons per day for the boat regardless of people on board.
Dockage and Moorings: zero
Cruising Permit: $500 one time fee. (I had kept it in Bahamas in excess of 1 year)

Dry storage in Bahamas was $180/month
Dry storage in Florida is now about $ 260/month
Insurance is about 2K/year
Launch and haul round trip: $400?
Maintenance: Enough to make me cry (almost)



A Beneteau 32.5 I have in charter yearly (BVI):

Insurance: Zero
Dockage: Zero
Maintenance: Zero
Launch & Haul: Zero
Monthly income: $960 ($11,500/year)

Cost using boat (or trade on another boat) about 5 weeks per year (for boat, not per person): About $2,500 (includes fuel, water, dingy rental, linen service, propane, boat cleaning, cruising permit, etc.)

Food and drink: about $30/day/person.
Moorings and dockage: average about $5/day of use. (I usually anchor)

Estimated boat depreciation: about $13,500/year (haven't sold it yet, so just an estimate).

(I've had the boat in charter in the Moorings for about 4.5 years and will continue it in Footloose for 1 more year, all with TUI marine.)

food here in mazatlan, as in ensenada, so far, is sooo cheeep--- under 20 pesos per day to eat, and i dont hqve to cook....LOL... IN sd was over 10 dollars per day-- (20 pesos is actually around 2 dollars....) repairs on my formosa---around 100 dollars, rent, and cat come to about 600 dollars per month. rofl. without the repairs i could easily do 500/month-- with my regular income, i am golden. this is hurrycame season pricing...winter, when i again anchor, will be considerably less for marinas are not in my plans. i prefer to anchor. in old harbor there was a 5 dollar fee for dink landing..daily
in sd, kat was 200 dollars per month, food and litter...here is less than 100 dollars per month.

We tell folks how much it costs and then they run off and play in the Cruising on $500 per month thread.

What do we have to say? LISTEN it costs more than $500 per month! LISTEN lots of folks put out their budgets and expenses. LISTEN they have cruised all round the world to more places you've ever heard of.

Janders, your figures bare out what I am saying, what we are all saying, but nobody listens.

If people can do it less than Janders good. But few can do it for half. Let alone that pathetic $500 per month.

Your right on the button I always get a bit of when I never see budgets for refits I just wonder if some people let thier boat fall to bits and then just step off. I am very maitenance minded and being steel am right on top of painting but after a 2 year adventure out sailing and no down time in a marina or yard at the moment Iam just coming to the end of a good 4 months getting up to speed for the next couple of years adventures. Sooooo if you newbies dont allow for some down time to do a good stint of mainenance you are missing a large part of budgeting and will end up one of those boats that is always being towed or broken down at some ungodly place waiting for parts at double the going price !!! I dont aim to put a downer on criusing but not all things can be done on the hook, otherwise I would do it in a good safe spot Jacko
