Owner Built Boats

I notice that the owner built boats are priced lower in general than their counterparts. Could anyone give me some advice about purchasing an owner built boat? Thanks

Be very careful. Some owner built boats are exquisite and constructed way beyond what any factory could afford to do. Others are built by people with no practical knowledge of the sea or how to build a boat. Each one will be different, each one needs to be carefully inspected.

We built a Westsail 32 from a bare hull. My hand is in one of the pictures in Ference Mate's first book. Almost all the W32s being built around that time were better than the factory boats though a few had really nutty interior layouts. Have seen other W32's that have been poorly constructed and would have to be gutted and started over.

Check them out, you may find a jewel or a turd.

The wide variety of quality often makes them valued low just in case. They don't have any track record since the owner only built one. any second boat built may be built better or worse. Yes, you can survey an owner built boat and find good things and bad thing but you cant really tell if all the good things indicate it all was done right. Even well known builders can make a mistake but reputation covers a few of those while the owner built boat can't escape any flaw discovered at any time.

So unless you plan on building your own and keeping it you need to decide how good you are before you start.
