Question No.of people,sz of bt, insurance

Newbie here:

Gotten the impression that the insurance companies require you to have more than just you and your wife on the boat for sailing in order to be covered by insurance if the boat is over a certain size. So, before we go looking at boats, it would be nice to have some idea of where that cut off would be. Tried looking for info on this but could not find any.

What is your experience with this?

Thank you.

Best way to find out is to go to the websites of two or three insurance brokers and fill out the forms for a quote request. The requirements vary by underwriter. A lot will depend on your boating experience and claims history.

A lot depends on your sailing resume. Marine insurance works differently than car insurance, and a great deal of consideration is given to training and experience.

I had no trouble getting insurance even for just me, let alone my wife and I. Our boat weighs 65k lb. tanks dry, 52' LOD, 62' LOA. I doubt you'll have trouble if you look.

G'day, mate. We have been with Lloyds Amlin and do not have a crew requirement. All the best. Cheers.

Never been asked about how many on the boat as least yet ! But then Im 200 ton lic and have sailing indoresment. And normaly carry only Liabilty Ins. unless I have a boat loan. but they are more worried about your boating experince then how many crew you have ! At least thats what Ive seen over the years !

My boat is a 1987 homebuilt Searunner 37 sailing trimaran. I want to get liability insurance only (the boat's value isn't worth a few years of premiums). Someone said just get an umbrella endorsement on my homeonwers. I have Allstate, they won't do it. Any suggestions along this line?

I have over 50 years sailing experience but no endorsements, age 58.

Quotes from BoatUS = $1400, quotes from Progressive = $668

Thanks,
John B.
