We have almost purchased a 1985 morgan catalina 454 in Florida,survey tomorrow.We are Canadian and plan to sail the carribean. curious about the best way to register it and avoid taxes?

Something about taxes and how new buyers move boats to avoid paying them was mentioned in the forums recently. I suggest try the "Google Custom Search" function on this forum site. Look in the upper menu bar for the Search drop down menu.

I'm not %100 sure, but I think if the boat was purchased in Florida then you owe some tax to Florida state.

As to Canadian tax. Register the boat in Canada (pretty sure you have to). You won't pay Canadian tax until the boat is brought into Canadian waters. If you never bring the boat to Canadian water, then you never pay tax. I can personally confirm this!

However, you will need to pay registration fees and possibly a tonnage survey. The tonnage survey depends on the size of boat and the registration docs are very clear if you need it.

I would start the registration ASAP as Transport Canada is about 8 weeks behind on registrations.

Thanks for the help, we have sorted the red tape and . we can legally avoid paying Florida sales tax by registering the boat in Canada and we are not subject to Canadian taxes untill we bring it there.We have 90 days( $580. for additinal 90 days)to remove the boat from florida for 6 month period then we can return to florida as long as we purchase a $25. annual cruising permit.So now we are looking for a dry dock in Georgia from May to Jan 2016. I have made a seperate post on this topic "cheapDIY dry docks in Ga." under Marinas
if anyone has some advice.
