Liability insurance only

Talbot, have you found any insurance brokers that will sell you liability insurance only? The other factor for me is that I am a Canadian cruising in Europe (I crossed the Atlantic without insurance) and the marinas here require insurance. I'm in the process of contacting Offshore Risk Management.

You could lie to them and make a policy on your computer.
It is not the best idea, but not very bad either.

I dont have 3rd party myself, but have been recommended http://www.basic-boat.com/ - however, their web site is out of action at the moment while being revised. Their phone number is 0044(0)8707 870030

Well after working on getting a better price for the past two months it looks like I will be staying with National marine underwriters. I only had two companys that were less money but they would not give me a policy without a new survey and to save $200 a year it is not worth spending $1500 for haulout and survey.

Nromally a insurance survey does not require a haul-out.
(It may vary from company to company, Boat Us for instance only needs an in-water survey. Allstate has been sending divers down to inspect the bottom...At their cost)

A purchase survey is $20.00 per foot, but the insurance survey is half, or $10.00 per foot.

Rates everywhere else is probably cheaper than Ft. Lauderdale

I used National Marine Underwriter for years, untill they jacked up the premioum 300% all of a sudden.

The secret to in-expensive insurance these days seems to be The Power Squadron.

I just hope that if someone did that that they are not next to my boat if something goes wrong.

Just like uninsured car drivers if something goes wrong and it does, who pays....

If you are not going to use insurance to meet the requirements of the marina's requirements the boater should make other docking arrangements.

When we came down the ICW and several fuel docks request proof of insurance before allowing us to tie up.....more to think about.

If one gave the marina a phony insurance policy, one would be guilty of fraud. In U.S. waters that is a criminal offense. It would not be detected or "usuaully" cared about, unless one needed that insurance. If you have to appear in civil court and you have comitted a fraud related to the incident, most courts are going to be VERY PUNITIVE. You'd better not have ANY assets, or expect to get any in the near future. I imagine if it is serious enough, you would be subject to criminal penalties also.

But... people still do it. I guess the watch word is don't let anybody slip near your boat.
